Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvette Rangel.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Shun the Sun Foundation is a non-profit whose mission is skin cancer prevention and education. I am the Race Director for two of its fundraising events: the Gilbert Half Marathon & 10k and the Queen Creek 5k. Through these events and others our goal is to get people involved in healthy lifestyles while educating them about skin cancer. We work closely with both the town of Gilbert and Queen Creek. We give back to the community by donating shade structures to go over school or park playgrounds and give presentations to groups about skin cancer.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As a non-profit it is always a struggle to raise funds. It is also difficult to convince people of the dangers of skin cancer and sun exposure.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Shun the Sun Foundation story. Tell us more about the business.
Since I got involved four years ago, our events have grown. The Gilbert races had 800 participants the first year in 2014, and last year 2016 we had doubled our numbers to 1800. We also brought the only official race to Queen Creek as part of their Fit Cities Campaign. We have donated shade structures in Mesa and Gilbert.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I personally do not believe in luck. I believe in hard work, organization and preparation.
