Meet Wendy Ellis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Ellis.

Hi Wendy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?

After closing my successful Pilates/Sports Conditioning and Dance business, Studio Kinetics LLC, in Texas to move to Carefree, Arizona, in 2017, I struggled to figure out how I would begin again to share my passion for movement.

As a Professional Dancer, Educator, Choreographer, Certified Pilates Instructor, Movement specialist and being very involved with the Pilates and Dance Community, starting anew seemed very daunting.

One day, a friend mentioned she had recently been through a lumbar spine fusion. I asked if she would give me the opportunity to help her move again and gain confidence to do the things she wanted to in her young life.

Dedication, commitment, and precision to her Pilates journey started my business journey in 2019 from my new home to the Mariachi Plaza in Carefree/Cave Creek. Shortly after, as my business grew, I expanded to different locations including a studio in Tempe to work with NFL players.

Around this time, I also started the Pilates program a JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort and Spa. In addition, continued to teach and choreograph dance works at Phoenix College and a local High School. As the owner, freelance Dance Instructor./choreographer, and instructor of Studio Kinetics I am proud of where I am today.

I love putting in the necessary work and time to give my clients the best possible experience as well as help them make whatever physical and lifestyle changes they need. They inspire me every day and I hope I do the same for them.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?

Starting my career over in a new state, new community, and not being known for my work has been a long hard process. This required a lot of patience and tremendous amount of work, having to prove to the community that I have a valid level of expertise supported by an extensive educational background and 20 years of experience with different levels, ages, ailments and performance goals.

As a woman business owner and onlyinstructor at Studio Kinetics balancing work and family life was critical and is still is hard to strike that balance, but what keeps me inspired is my family, community andclients. also, that I have collaborated with an incredible onsite massage therapist who shares the same passion for body work and movement. My journey will never end and will continue to put in the work as Pilates, movement evoles so my studio a provides a safe, comfortable, welcoming, and well equipped for anyone from novices to professionals ..

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

I have a BA and MFA in Dance/Choreography and am a Certified Pilates Instructor , Movement Specialist, PMA, with additional Pilates-based certifications such as, Fletcher Pilates Level 1, towelwork, Buff Bones, Balanced Body Arc, Pilates Rehabilitation and Gyrotonic work. Having a professional dance background has helped me tremendously as a Pilates Instructor because I am very in tune with the body, body biomechanics and body movement.

I can clearly understand a client’s body issues or spot something that could be causing a problem for the client without the client mentioning it to me. Incorporating some dance concepts, technique with the Pilates work I find helps clients of all ages, levels, and ailments.

I would say I don’t specialize in one specific area. I love working with a variety of people from those just wishing to increase their mobility, strength, balance, and physical fitness to those with specific injuries or needing rehabilitation to those wanting better sport-driven conditioning to professional athletes looking to optimize their performance training. My personality thrives on the challenges of helping and satisfying a wide variety of different clients’ needs.

What I feel I am known for is connecting with my clients to provide the best results for their specific needs and making a difference in their bodies that changing their lifestyles. It’s not about just the work, it’s about connecting the mind and body so that they can carry on without me. I want them to learn. I am proud of working with NFL players, Olympic runners, gymnasts, and baseball players and seeing what a difference it made for their performance.

I am equally as proud to see how my work has completely changed the lives of people with serious injuries. I enjoy the challenges of creating different workouts for all my clients. Using and combining Pilates exercises, dance technique concepts, and other movement modalities, as well as my years of experience and continued education, makes me a different instructor than most.

I love my boutique studio because I can really focus on my clients and the community, adjust and learn what works for them, bring in new equipment or unique props for what clients may need, adjust scheduling and change studio layout based on what seems to works best for the clients.

How do you define success?

I measure success by my clients physical and mental success. Changing their life forever by starting a Pilates Journey or should I say a movement journey using different modalities.

As my clients find benefits in my classes or private/duet sessions and start feeling better they spread the word about Pilates and my work. Word-of-mouth referrals have helped fill my classes and often create waitlists in the off-season. I am blessed to be able to provide additional and newer equipment each season for my clients to enhance their experience here at Studio Kinetics.

Obviously, I hope for and seek a positive and growing business, but I get the most amount of joy and satisfaction from seeing more people discover my studio, my passion and love for teaching the work, community/ family, and the welcoming atmosphere I have built.
