Meet Trailblazer Robyn Halperin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn Halperin.

Robyn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been obsessed with decorating and unique home décor that is stylish and functional. You can say that decorating has always been in my blood. My personal home decorating style definitely leans towards casual, comfortable California vibe. I knew I wanted to share this feeling with others that is how I decided I wanted to open a furniture boutique store that included affordable quality furniture and décor that you couldn’t find anywhere else in the Upper West Side. I would often think to myself: our personalities, tastes, and lives are all so different and our homes should reflect that individuality.

I was ready to open Robyn’s Nest about 5 years ago, however, since I was new to running a business, I knew I needed to be smart about my approach and first gain experience. That was when I bought a flower shop to learn about what it really took to run a business to be sure I was ready. After 5 years of gaining small business experience, the timing just felt right, and I was able to open Robyn’s Nest in the same location I had dreamt about when I first considered the idea. I sold the flower store to dedicate 100% of my attention to building up Robyn’s Nest since the work doesn’t end when the doors are closed at the end of the day. Every moment since our opening in Fall of 2017, I have is spent progressing Robyn’s Nest by looking for new pieces, helping customers design special rooms in their homes, monitoring lasting trends, and learning new design techniques.

Other things you should know about me? I am a true lover and supporter of all animals, especially elephants and sheltered dogs. The proceeds of certain products we sell at Robyn’s Nest goes towards fighting against animal abuse around the world. I also have a serious holiday decor addiction (no joke!). Oh… and I have more than 30 bins of Halloween & Christmas decorations!

Has it been a smooth road?
I have learned that sometimes the biggest challenge is the mental wall you build up against yourself. My message to all the aspiring businesswomen out there is if you feel passionate about an idea, just dive in! No matter how much planning you put into an idea, life will always throw something your way that you weren’t expecting and rather than crumbling, you need to be flexible with the ebb and flow of the water you just dove into. In the end, whether you succeed or not, you will save yourself from the burden of thinking what could have been and instead, you will feel confident in the fact that you went with your gut. Essentially, venture out of your comfort zone to pursue something you felt strongly about. At Robyn’s Nest, we have a piece of wall art that inspires me every time I see it, it reads “She’s got that whole purpose-driven, warrior princess, save the world type of vibe.” I encourage you to be that warrior princess.

We’d love to hear more about Robyn’s Nest.
Robyn’s Nest is based on the bold idea that your home should reflect the unique character that makes you feel happy. I take pride in the uniqueness of the pieces we carefully select to add to our collection. I strongly believe that your home should represent you and celebrate what makes us different from one another. What sets us apart from the other furniture stores, is not only our ability to find uncommon furniture and decor pieces but that we are also a highly transitional store, meaning we love to mix things up. You’ll notice that the way we design our showrooms is unlike other stores, we push the boundaries, break the rules of design, and experiment with different colors, textures, patterns, and styles. That is why our name, Robyn’s Nest, is all encompassing of our brand; just like a nest, we pull unique pieces from all over to come together and build a happy place for you to call your home.

We also understand that not everyone that walks into our store is comfortable with the home design. This is why we love to provide expert advice to our customers. It is very common that I have customers who bring in photos of their home and the style they’re looking to achieve and we make it happen. I guide and offer advice to anyone seeking some assistance with the design of their home, and if a customer chooses to buy a full room of décor, we will even go to their home to help them set it up. It’s a great experience to really get to know our customers and make a difference.

The attitude in the store when you walk in will always be lively, charming and fun…just like me!!! My team will always help make your home a place to be brimming with color and personal character.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I love sharing my passion for home decor with every customer that walks through our door. I have met so many great artists at Markets, networking groups and by customer recommendations. As a result, we partner with a local artist as much as possible to help promote their artwork and homemade décor at our special events and artist spotlight series. Networking is so important because it allows us to be our brand advocate and gives us the opportunity to share our journey, the latest news and support the community. We have found that special events have been a great opportunity to meet new people in our community. For example, Ladies’ Night Sip & Shops is a monthly event at Robyn’s Nest where we have specials on the selected item and serve wine and desserts; it’s such a fun event that allows me to network and offer design tips.
