Meet Trailblazer Rachael Schaefer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachael Schaefer.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Rachael. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
From a very young age, I knew that I loved to express myself in various ways. Fashion, music, photography, decorating, writing, traveling, etc. For some reason, I always felt that I had to choose one that defined me and make a career out of it. I was so concerned with creating an image for myself rather than just being myself and letting my identity showcase that.

I distinctly remember graduating from college, finding a 9-5 job and feeling that I somehow failed because I wasn’t making money doing what I loved. Although that would be amazing and I hope it happens someday, I realize now that having a passion doesn’t mean it needs to be a career. It is possible to have a job that pays the bills and live your passions outside of that.

Coming to this realization has allowed me to be more free and creative. It has let me find joy and express every aspect of who I am. Who says you have to pick just one passion? Social media is such an incredible platform and a crazy place that I’m still learning so much about. With Instagram, I started to combine all of my passions by using photos and videos. I find so much inspiration there and my goal is to inspire others to tap into their creativity and live their passions.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest struggle I have faced is anxiety. I get anxious over everything (I’m working on it). Something I have found to trigger my anxiety is comparison. A friend once told me that it is the thief of joy. The greatest and most practical advice I can give any woman is to stay away from comparing yourself to others. A picture doesn’t always say a 1,000 words as they say. Sometimes, a picture just shows you one frame from a much bigger story. Be someone who aims for authenticity instead of shaping an image you want the public eye to see.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m just myself! I love to share my faith, family, music, adventures, fashion, and home ideas. This year, I’m focusing on engaging my community. It’s amazing how social platforms give you the unique opportunity to be inspired and encourage others. My goal with all of this is to continue to cultivate creativity.

I work a 9-5 job, come home and make dinner, hang out with my dogs and husband, go to sleep and do it all over again. On the outside looking in, my life is extremely ordinary, but I refuse to live an ordinary life. My passion doesn’t have to be my 9-5 and it doesn’t mean I need to get paid from it. I would love for one day, my small ideas and pictures grow into a full-fledged career! But for now, I’m going to continue to learn more about my community and what makes them so inspirational.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Growing up, my parents instilled many values in my life. I remember them telling me “A good name is to be chosen over great riches.” I think about this verse in the Bible all the time. I always ask myself… how do I want to leave my mark on the world? What if something that seems so insignificant carries so much weight. More than anything, I want people to remember me for my character, not what I do or how much money I make. How I conduct my life on a day to day basis will determine how much impact I will have in the world around me. Starting small is bigger than you think!
