Today we’d like to introduce you to Madalaine Brannum.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After graduating college, I figured I would be the type of salesperson that was a force to be reckoned with. I envisioned myself “in charge” and rolling over the competition. I imagined what life would be like as I climbed the corporate ladder, gaining experience and knowledge to effectively lead a team of other highly effective salespeople. That dream ended abruptly when I had my first child. After Sebastian was born, NOTHING. ELSE. MATTERED. That is, of course, until Sebastian’s little sister, Sicily was born.
Kids changed me. They changed my life plan, my body and my soul. I was no longer concerned with sales or working full time outside the home. I went to school and earned my real estate license and have been successfully making people’s dreams come true, one house at a time. However, that requires a lot of time away from home, too. After 6 months back to work full time, and both kids in full time day care, my husband and I decided that was long enough for me to be away from home. This was the catalyst to launch our own company so we could continue having at least one parent in the home.
My husband had learned the trade of locksmithing in Texas, before he moved here with me. He worked at several locksmith shops where he learned some more tricks of the trade and was able to continue honing his skills. With a small gift from a family member, we bought the necessary equipment, filed the paperwork, bought some business insurance and Lockology was born. My husband is slowly transitioning from a full time job to full time locksmith. I will now use those sales skills to grow our business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Anything worth having is rarely easy. Juggling two children 3 and under, a household, part-time work and growing a business is a huge struggle. But the reward is monumental. For me, it was a no brainer. I knew that being with my children and doing whatever it took to be home with them was more important than anything else. My recommendation to other women is to first figure out what you want. Things that I wanted 5 years ago are different than the things I want today. Stay focused on your dream and take it day by day. Don’t get overwhelmed by thinking about the end prize, but enjoy the journey and what is happening in the daily.
We’d love to hear more about Lockology.
I am most proud of my husband and I working as a team to manage all the things required to keep our home, business and family afloat. I have confidence in his abilities to perform the work and confidence in my ability to drive sales and build clientele. We are known for speedy, thorough service with a smile. We specialize in residential and commercial re-keys, lock replacements, and emergency lock-out services. Our brand combines the ability of skilled trades people and honest customer service.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I focus on word of mouth advertising and trying to remain top of mind on social media. There are some local networking groups such as BNI and the chamber of commerce, but those can get expensive. I believe in offering honest work, a great product at a fair price with outstanding customer service to build repeat clientele.
