Meet Trailblazer Kianna Kareem

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kianna Kareem.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kianna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
KBK Kollections was founded in 2018 by myself, Kianna Kareem. I recently did a big chop (hair cut) about a year ago, and I wanted to find a natural hair product line that would bring my hair back to life. There are many options out there, but I wanted to create something of my own something that my clients and I could enjoy. KBK Kollections consists of a few carrier oils, but for the most part, it’s embedded with essential oils. Essential oils are beneficial in many different ways, but it took a lot of test runs to see what actually works well together.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to success has not been easy, it takes roughly about three years to build your brand and stride. The first year, I had to build a foundation. When becoming an entrepreneur, consistency and knowing that quality is over quantity is a definite must. The second year is your branding year. Every time someone sees your logo, they need to know that is you! Let it become a known fact that you are your brand! Show it off as much as you can, no matter what the reactions are of your company. Advertise, post on social platforms and add hashtags of categories that fit in your companies description. Lastly, the third year would be your everlasting stride. If your company is online based, like KBK Kollections, at some point, with the great leg work you have put in, you should wake up to direct deposits in your account! The best advice I could give to any woman, or anyone for that matter, is to always remain authentic and just BE YOU! You will not please everyone, but you will please enough people to succeed. Take your company as serious as some of these big name brands, they once started out small as well. Lastly, never short yourself because you are a small business owner, know your worth and then add tax!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I call myself the ‘Hairologist’, I am a 22-year-old hairstylist from Detroit, MI but I currently reside in Tucson, AZ. I have been studying the ins & outs of hair since I owned my first flat iron, at the age of nine. I specialize in extensions, braids, frontals, wigs and MORE! What I am most proud of is never having fear as a characteristic of mine. The one and the only thing that may set me apart from others is that I am a believer. God has brought me to levels that I could not have dreamt of. With him by my side, I will ALWAYS accomplish anything I aspire to do and become!

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
There are many ways that media coverage can be a great opportunity. People are going to talk whether you’re doing well or not. You are not going to please everyone and you’ll never be enough for most people. But as long as your company is out there, that could spark interests for others to love your company. Never take anything personally, it’s just business. There are many opportunities that women fit well for, I believe the beauty industry is one of them.
