Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Hoffman.
Jennifer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved helping women feel beautiful. In middle school, my friends would come over for a “back to school” makeover and I would help them buy a new outfit and do their makeup and hair. As we have all grown up, it turned into me doing makeup for their weddings! Fresh out of high school, I became a licensed medical aesthetician and ran a medical spa.
I then went on to get married, have a family, and went through several moves. We have now landed in Arizona and I am primarily working in freelance makeup artistry while expecting our second child.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have had a tremendous amount of struggle since the start of my career as I have battled many health issues. These health issues have caused us to have to move several times for treatment, including an overseas move and now, across the nation (we are originally from Philadelphia). It is very hard to have a career when you’re not feeling well and going through one life transition after another. I have had to take a lot of time off (and if that’s you, that’s okay!) but it has also taught me the value of learning there is a season for everything. When you are passionate and gifted at something, it will always find its way into your life one way or another. I believe it’s just how God made us! So, for me, for a time, that meant just helping my friends with makeup. At other times, it has meant running a business. Pursue your passion in whatever way it is put in front of you. Just take the next step. We don’t need to know ten steps ahead. It will all fall into place!
We’d love to hear more about SBN Beauty.
I am experienced as a medical aesthetician but currently offering freelance makeup artistry services. I primarily use a brand of makeup called Maskcara Beauty that SIMPLIFIES the makeup routine, saving women time and money. Every product they need can fit in one compact in the palm of their hand. I believe when we simplify these elements of life, it creates more room to live an ABUNDANT life and focus on more than just spending time on our makeup.
I also teach women to ENHANCE their features, not cover them up. I believe every woman is beautiful and I love helping them believe it, too.
Maskcara also gives me the opportunity to train other women as artists and help them earn an income, which I am really passionate about! I also love training other aestheticians-to-be at beauty schools a new method of doing makeup and another avenue of income for their businesses.
Of course, I also love doing makeup for weddings, proms, dance companies, special occasions, etc. and being a small part of those special moments. After all, that’s how I started out with my “back to school” makeovers!
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
In my case, the biggest barrier has just been phases of life – having children, moving, health issues, and all the other things that are just a part of daily life for all of us. Many of them being tremendous blessings of course, like having a family. It just all takes time and that’s where prioritizing comes in, and learning how to work your business without sacrificing time for those other important things. It’s a balancing act that is constantly changing and you have to learn to be flexible and adjust.
