Meet Trailblazer Helen Edwards

Today we’d like to introduce you to Helen Edwards.

Helen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all began with an idea, a laptop and my friend, Jessica suggesting I start an LLC while sipping coffee at Lucy’s Healthy Marketplace in Phoenix, AZ. Sexy Freedom LLC was born based off the title of my new book, Nothing Sexier Than Freedom. I’ve always had the entrepreneur spirit and decided to create a brand that could offer a platform for women to express themselves freely and connect with each other through multiple channels. I began volunteering and speaking in shelters, teaching Life Skill classes in 2008 in Phoenix with just my laptop, a stereo and a powerpoint projector. I took some time off to do some backpacking to a few countries. When I returned, I published a magazine for teens called, Conscious Cool Magazine. After a few thousand jobs, I wanted to try something new and jumped into Yoga. I’ve been a traveling yogini teaching both Vinyasa and Buti Yoga for the past few years. I currently am apart of the Prison Yoga Project in Phoenix, AZ with a team of volunteers teaching Yoga to assist in the rehabilitation program for inmates. I am launching my first book, Nothing Sexier Than Freedom, in Phoenix, AZ on April 21, 2018. I’m also the main host of the Sexy Freedom Media Podcast that we began last year and is now on multiple platforms. My business partner, Sara Gypsy Wolf and I are also collaborating together to host our first Wild Woman Rising Retreat in Phoenix, AZ on April 6.

Sexy Freedom is a brand uniting women to connect no matter the size of their ideas, businesses and fortunes. I, myself, am a wild woman who enjoys a sexy dress, a powerful event, and a good workout. I also enjoy going to a backyard BBQ, gangsta music and dirty dancing. My experience is from such wide and diverse backgrounds that I’m able to connect with a variety of people. It’s my mission to connect those who want to connect and open minds to enjoy life and all it’s many experiences and flavors abundantly. My team and I do just this by providing workshops, retreats and events. We are currently building our business with two additional new managing members, new merchandise and preparing for the book launch and our upcoming Yoga and Women’s events.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been rocky for sure. Starting a business with the team of one comes with many challenges and obstacles. Some of the struggles were dealing with my own self-doubt, financial contributions and learning all the ins and outs of business. It took me five years and five editors later to self publish my first book. All of my achievements made me work hard for it and it makes the celebration that much sweeter. I had some very hard struggles emotionally dealing with the suicide of my brother only last summer the day after the launch of my website and book trailer. Having to push through that difficult time made me a stronger and more determined woman than ever before to share my story and passions.

My advice for any woman beginning their journey is turn off any media that you find yourself looking at and comparing yourself harshly with. You want a strong mind and body to work with you and not against your goals. You also want a supportive group of women who can encourage you along the way. Believe in yourself when no one does, because naysayers will come passing through. Utilize what you have to get to where you want to go. If you don’t have a laptop, go to a library. If you don’t have the money to invest in what you are trying to do, get an extra job. Very important that you write everything down that you want. Create a vision book so you can travel and take your visual goals with you wherever you go. Join groups online who have the same interest and goals. Try different things and learn from them. Give gratitude every step of the way. Be cool and kind to yourself through the process of getting to your goals because so many people have walked the same path and believe one day you will ‘make it’ too!

We’d love to hear more about Sexy Freedom and Book, Nothing Sexier Than Freedom.
Currently, I’m mostly known as an author, speaker, traveling, Yogini and Podcaster which promotes the brand of Sexy Freedom. I specialize in creating events and executing ideas that bring women together.

I’m most proud of the achievement of creating an inspiring book and sharing yoga to the masses who would have never cared to try nor learn of it before.

I think what sets me apart from others is my ability to create new ideas and collaborate with diverse peoples, cultures and minorities because of my own fluid upbringing and background. I’m a big believer in making attempts to bridge the gaps that separate us from being kind and working with one another to build a better us and future for our next generation. I think feeling the fear and trying “it” out anyways by collaboration, bartering and volunteering is a big role in the success of our team and network. I also believe my book will set me apart once it becomes more popular because of some of the controversial subjects it covers: Cheating, sex, lies, pain, passion and pursuit. Since my pre-order books released online, I’ve received over dozens of emails, messages and texts from women who purchased and have reached out to me stating, “Thank you” for speaking up about subjects that women feel but are often too afraid to express.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I believe women have opportunities, especially in the United States. After traveling in 2011 to a few countries and seeing first hand some of the under privileged rights of women, my mind and heart woke up. I realized how much I had taken for granted the opportunities right on my own soil. I also believe the fact that I get to wake up knowing we have veterans, soldiers and women activists who fought and died for my right to go for my dreams is an astounding opportunity not to be taken for granted. Women’s rights, advocacy and enterprises have and continue to be on the rise to influence, assist and empower women from all over the world to accelerate in our own ventures and this is a phenomenal opportunity.

I believe women are well positioned for leadership, entrepreneurial and great humanitarian building opportunities.
