Meet Trailblazer Ericka Brian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ericka Brian.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ericka. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
One day, I woke up realizing I had lost the spark for living. Everyday felt the same. I was working at a hospital, helping people in the most vulnerable times in their lives, even those on the cusp of death. One day, I was walking the hospital halls on my way to help a patient ambulate, a man came out of a room with so much grief and frustration preparing to sob. I offered my support and he said “if you really want to help then stop making excuses and live your life the way you want RIGHT NOW”. Mind you, I had never met this man before. He shared that he and his wife worked 2-3 jobs at a time to raise their kids comfortably and to save for their retirement. They had just retired and now she’s been diagnosed with breast cancer that spread everywhere in her body and only has months to live. His words pierced through my soul. I sobbed that night because someone who wanted to live is dying, and I, who had no drive or spark to live was living without any intention. At that time in my life, I had no real connect to friends or family. I felt alone. I gave myself to my patients, my husband at the time and my daughter. I had no direction other than serving everyone else. I was dying inside. Then, I came across a book I was given to by my high school friend the year after we graduated called “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success” by Dr. Deepak Chopra. My life was changed.

Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to meet Deepak, become one of his certified yoga and meditation teachers, graduated from ASU as a single mother, founded Return to Yourself Wellness, publish a book called Pause, Shift and Refresh, I’ve facilitated amazing workshops around the valley… but most importantly I learned to shift from living based off of the conditions of my life to living with full intention and purpose as I continue to create the person I wish to be for myself and others.

Has it been a smooth road?
Most of the time, there was no road. There was no map or navigation at reach. I had to pave my own way. Struggling as a single mom working 2-3 and sometimes even four jobs at a time just to live paycheck to paycheck. I had to pay day care centers most of what I was making. My kid’s wellness was my priority and I knew the struggle would be temporary. I have to say it was hard leaving them, but I paid top dollar knowing they were in a good place.

I was living in a state with no family near, I had no choice but to make it on my own with these two babies on my back. In 2014, I graduated from the Chopra Center, in 2015 I graduated from Arizona State University, In 2016 I LLC Return to Yourself Wellness, In 2017 I published Pause, Shift and Refresh and now in 2018 I continue to work in the healthcare setting, teaching yoga on the side, and facilitating workshops around the valley helping other ignite the spark that they too have lost or has become dimmed.

My kids have endured the struggle, tears, loss, and opportunity every step of the way.

We’d love to hear more about Return to Yourself Wellness.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
We give way to much of ourselves to others before ever coming to know who we truly are or what we desire.

When we come to know the person within, we shift into this unlimited source of love, compassion, understanding, and acceptance. These attributes help us expand in so many facets of our lives. Only then, will we begin to see our potential and how capable we are in serving others and achieve all that we desire.
