Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony Arcaro.
Tony, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started in this industry in Toronto, Canada after finishing my military service when I was hired by a specialty security company that provided dignitary & executive protection, along with traditional security services. I worked in various specialized security officer positions including as an armed security officer, private investigator and special assignment group team member in Toronto nearly 36 years ago. Through numerous field assignments and eventual promotion to the corporate environment, I have accumulated extensive experience operating/managing specialized private & public security operations, investigative and executive protection services in both the Canada and the United States.
I have always been focused on the improvement of the security industry’s offerings by creating specialized tactics and training programs for the private sector to deal with some of the more challenging environments found in large urban cities or large complex facilities. I developed, teach and use assertive proactive and suppressive techniques to address some of the more difficult security issues faced by security operatives while being mindful of the risk management concerns of our clients.
I am a leader in the industry using technology to enhance the effectiveness of the company’s operations while addressing the need to maintain the traditional visible deterrent of the Uniformed Security Operative including the use of body cameras, radios, and specialized patrol vehicles.
I have always been an active supporter of public/private partnership programs and pioneered the highly effective Special Patrol Program that used highly trained Uniformed Armed Security Operatives to work in concert with local law enforcement, emergency services personnel and other government agencies to help to address nuisance and street-level crime in high-risk neighborhoods in Chicago. I formulated this program at the request of local Aldermen and created the standards for personnel, training, equipment & vehicles still in use today. The Special Patrol Program for the SSA Districts helped provide a Uniformed physical security presence to address community concerns for safety due to shrinking public budgets, prioritization of critical police resources and skyrocketing demand.
I know that there are real challenges ahead for the security industry and it is imperative that we prepare for those threats proactively with the best people, training, equipment, and technology available. “In the world today, there are no second opportunities to stop a real threat”
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wouldn’t say that I have had troubles in becoming successful, but we certainly have faced challenges … The greatest challenge in any new market is to convince clients to give you an opportunity to do it right after years of being told by traditional companies that all they need is an observe and report minimum wage retiree to solve their issues only to be disappointed time after time. Or worse, to convince the client that we really are different and we really do it right, we don’t make promises that we cannot keep. Clients really need to be educated to believe that anyone in this industry could be worth more than low bid.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Special Protection & Patrol – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a specialty security & investigative firm who work to address the needs of our clients. Our position in the market is somewhere between the police and traditional security market….what I mean by that is usually the police respond to your immediate emergency issues but cannot stay there all the time while traditional security companies are ineffective further frustrating their clients who want results. SPP’s placement in the market is simple, we use unconventional techniques, tactics, and technology to create an effective option for our clients and resolve challenging security threats.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Success is complicated for me; it involves several aspects;
-Effectively educating the market on the value of competent security and being recognized as the expert in what we do. I know that I have been successful when I am the first and last call that the client has to make to obtain the help they need knowing that their property and person are worth the investment in quality service.
-Developing a cadre of highly qualified Security Operatives / Specialists who are completely engaged in what they do. I know that I have been successful when employees proactively recruit new staff, volunteer for new opportunities and fill training classes.
-Growing a business built on quality, not quantity where we resolve or control our client’s security issues using technology to enhance our Operative’s effectiveness. I know that I have been successful when our methods and systems start to be copied by the competition.
-It is always satisfying to realize a fair return on my investment, the bills get paid and I am able to include my family in all aspects of the business.
