Meet Tommie Cochrum

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tommie Cochrum.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My name is Tommie Cochrum and my studio is Tommie girl Photography. I have been a professional portrait photographer for about six years. I am originally from Texas but my husband, our daughter, & myself, just recently moved from SoCal, so as my California native husband likes to say, “we are on neutral ground now”. Arizonians have been absolutely warm and welcoming!

Since moving to Arizona, I had a crazy idea to go ahead and open a physical studio in Old Town! Yep, we’ve been here less than a year and I have had to start all over to build a clientele, but hey I needed a challenge! Crazy!

I have always been a lover of arts and photography since a child. I used to love to use my mom’s vivtar camera to capture the things around me, I can still remember the sound of the flash loading…I am dating myself a bit! When in college, I studied photography but never had the guts to put my education into use, so I went into sales.

After my daughter was born six years ago, I decided to get out of the corporate world and take my photography talents further and become an accredited photographer. I quickly found my niche and haven’t looked back since!

Please tell us about your art.
I am a professionally trained & self-taught portrait photographer and I specialize in maternity, newborn, child, & family photography. I take my education seriously through extensive training in photography as well as safely posing a newborn.

My goal is to become my client’s family photographer. I strive to become their go-to photographer at every stage of their life!

I passionately seek to provide an exclusive boutique experience for my clients, from our first meeting by providing a studio tour, cookies included, to a tailored session, and to their final viewing of their images!

Heirloom hand-crafted albums, beautiful wall art, as well as gifts for family are just a few items that I offer at my studio. Yes, I lovingly force my clients to print their images! Look digital images are great but when you are gone is your family going to be able find and access their past images? Print your photos, even the ones on your phone!
I aspire to create a memorable experience for my clients that will not only last a lifetime but for generation to come!

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Keep pushing!

When it comes to learning, gaining experience, and equipment, you don’t always need the latest and greatest. Start where you are at right now. Seek out workshops, in person and online. Buy used equipment and upgrade every few years. Give yourself obtainable goals and pace yourself!

Regarding marketing, finding as many avenues to partner with other businesses is a perfect way to find that ideal client! Networking with others in your field as well as charities are amazing opportunities as well. There are tons of like-minded FB groups out there! And to that, don’t forget the power of social media! Start to brand yourself and let people know who you are and what you are about!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I am continually partnering with Nordstrom Scottsdale, Modern Milk, Capture 4 A Cause for unique client sessions!
