Meet Tom and Sheri Schrader of Masterpiece Donuts & Coffee+ in Arcadia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom and Sheri Schrader.

Tom and Sheri, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Having a long-time love of coffee and donuts and having traveled extensively in the U.S. (and Europe), Tom & Sheri had yet to find a place that served great donuts AND great coffee. You either get one or the other, not both, so an idea hatched: Why not put great donuts together with great coffee? And while we are at it, why not make it an inviting ambience that encourages people to come in and hang out. And that was the start.

After developing the best made-to-order, served-warm donuts and deciding on bringing our favorite premier European coffee (illy) together in our new concept, we decided on adding some more distinctions: A healthy option and a celebration of art.

The healthy option is a yogurt/fresh berries and bananas/granola bowl that also boasts a very tasty nutritional supplement.

The celebration of art became a natural since our donuts provide the opportunity for customers to create their own donut masterpiece. We not only had an art historian name the 13 favorite donuts for famed artists based on the artists’ various distinctions, we created three gallery spaces for hanging local school art as well as professional art in the shop. Local schools and artists were more than happy to display with MD&C+. And we hold a monthly vote by customers on which art per school they like the best. Winners are awarded gift cards for art supplies and, of course, donuts.

We believe that today’s consumer also wants the fast option, so we have online ordering/payment, plus phone ahead ordering, and you can “step to the front of the line” by using one of our 5 kiosk iPads for ordering and paying, too. As always, there is a friendly, helpful, smiling face at the cashier, too, so choose the mode you prefer. Our success is going to be dependent on attracting the morning grab ‘n go coffee crowd so we have especially accommodated them, too.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
After spending a number of months finding the ideal Arcadia location, we waited for construction delays to have the space delivered to us. Then, the Tenant Improvements took twice as long as expected. All this, we were told, was to be expected, but that didn’t make it any easier. We were anxious to get going.

Having never been in the food industry made it a little more challenging, but we were able to launch to rave reviews on Yelp and Google and now we simply seek to acquaint more and more people with our concept–delicious warm donuts, world-class coffee in a welcoming ambience that has three galleries of monthly rotation of art. And, oh yes, there’s the healthy option for those who love great coffee but want to eat an exceedingly healthy option.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Masterpiece Donuts & Coffee+ story. Tell us more about the business.
Masterpiece Donuts and Coffee +, aka MD&C+, is proud of our five distinctions:

  1. Made-to-order donuts served warm (choose your own icings, toppings and drizzles)
  2. World-class coffee–illy coffee from Europe which is bold but not bitter
  3. A healthy option that is calorie and nutritionally smart and satisfying (tastes amazing!). That is what the + in the name is all about.
  4. A warm, inviting ambience that invites people to relax, hang out to visit with friends or set up your laptop and work.
  5. The celebration of art and our support of local art.

We are also proud to be a unique, local Arcadia shop, not a national chain. And our staff is welcoming and happy to accommodate our customers.

The saying “the harder I work the luckier I get” is probably the best way to describe Tom’s 40+ yrs. in business to date. Having pioneered in another industry, he brought a lot of experience and business sense with him to this new concept. Is doing something new easy? No. But it is rewarding to create jobs and offer opportunities as well as a new concept to the consumer. We have been very gratified by the number of Arcadian residents who have thanked us for being in the neighborhood, a part of their community. One review we especially liked: “The soon-to-be Arcadian icon….”
