Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Heise.
Tim, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started Absolute Pet Care LLC in early 2009.
I was doing volunteer work for the AZ humane society, walking and socializing the homeless dogs there. At that particular time in my life, I was “between dogs.” My most recent dog had passed away, crossed over the rainbow bridge, and I wasn’t able to have a dog at that time. Between my work schedule and financial situation, it just would not have been good for the dog. If I had one, I knew I wouldn’t be able to give it the daily attention dogs desperately need and deserve. Therefore, I started volunteering at the Humane Society on weekends. I love dogs more than anything in the world, and being without a particular furry loved one of my own, I tried to fill that void by helping the homeless ones.
It was a good fit for a while, especially since there are so many homeless dogs in need of homes, it’s a very sad reality. I just wanted to help as many as I possibly could. I was that incredible dog-loving friend who always helped out with pet sitting, dog walking, etc… for all my friends and neighbors. I realized that along with my natural love for dogs, I had an incredible way of bonding with dogs. I can meet a dog, ANY DOG, and become its best friend almost instantly. It’s difficult to explain, but it’s true. Regardless of the size, breed, temperament, etc… every dog is a great dog to me.
Also during this time, I began to realize that most dogs do not receive the daily attention they need. Every dog needs to have a loving home, a proper diet and exercise, socialization, training, etc… I began doing research on how I could not only help with rescues and adoptions but how I could also help educate pet owners on how to improve their pets’ lives. I decided that I just needed to do more. It became an obsession.
That’s when I decided to join the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters, start my own professional pet sitting business, and make it my personal mission to help pets and pet owners, full time.
So that’s what I did. Aside from all of the business hats I had to wear every day, my main focus was my continued pet care education. I needed to be great, not just passionately obsessed with helping pets. I ended up becoming certified in Pet Care, Pet Behavior, Pet Nutrition, Pet CPR and First Aid, and any other pet care related things which could help me become as knowledgeable as possible to be the best professional pet care provider I could be.
That has helped me tremendously. Not just with my chosen profession, but also with my daily life. I have a special-needs dog with health issues I must work with daily. She wouldn’t survive with just an average dog-parent. I hate to think what her life would be like if she didn’t have someone with my education and experience with dogs.
Working with dogs professionally is certainly not for everyone. It’s not for an amateur or anyone who doesn’t know what they’re doing. However, it has been perfect for me and is one of the most rewarding careers I could ever imagine.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Aside from the difficulties of creating a service-based, startup business… there were many other growing pains along the way. Not only did I have to work on my craft, I also had to learn everything about starting and running a business. But, just like they say… “There’s no education quite like experience.” I had to just jump in with both feet and DO IT!
It took a lot of frustration, growing pains, hard work, and dedication… did I mention it took a lot of hard work? Well, it did. One year, I actually went through my calendar and counted the days off I had. In 2013, I had a whopping total of NINE DAYS off the entire calendar year. Now, understand this… I am NOT complaining, I’m just explaining. I love what I do for a living. I wouldn’t trade it for anything at all. However, being a professional dog walker takes quite a toll on my body. Not just the basic wear and tear of aching joints and swollen feet every day. I have developed plantar fasciitis in both feet and must regularly continue physical therapy because of it, most likely for the rest of my life. However, like I said, I still wouldn’t trade my time with dogs for anything else. It’s just who I am and what I do.
Absolute Pet Care – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Absolute Pet Care LLC is a professional pet care company. We provide daily dog walking, pet sitting for pet owners who travel, dog training, leash training, overnight stays, house sitting, etc…
We are known for being the best at what we do. Basically, everyone in our service area who owns a pet needs to be registered with us, because they will need us eventually. Whether they work long hours and need us to take their dogs out for walks and potty breaks, or they travel and need us to care for their pets and homes, or they aren’t physically able to care for their pets, or they need to be educated on behavior or nutrition for their pets. We do provide diet and nutrition advice and plan special diets for dogs.
For dogs, here in America, one out of every three deaths is due to cancer. Many believe kibble (dry commercial dog food) is the main culprit. We educate dog owners on proper nutrition and can provide recipes to help their dogs live better lives.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Well, I define success by my personal happiness. That’s it for me. As long as I am happy each day, that’s all that matters. Dogs make me happy, so I consider each day a “success” for me.
Of course, happiness doesn’t pay the bills, so there are other things to consider such as profit, clients, growth, a stellar business reputation, quality referrals, making our clients happy and other basic business criteria.
But for me in general, my happiness is my success.
- We offer lifetime registration for our clients. What that means is once a client goes through the $25 Registration Appointment, as long as they reside within our service area, they will forever be an Absolute Pet Care client. No matter how many years down the road, or how many pets they add to their family, once they register with us, they no longer have to look for a professional pet care provider again.
- Dog walking and pet sitting appointments are $27 for one pet, $30 for multiple pets.
- We provide overnight stays where we stay in a client’s home with their pets for $125 for a 10 hour stay, which breaks down to just $12.50. Which is just over the minimum wage requirement.
