Meet Tee Jay Netters of FOCUS Enrichment

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tee Jay Netters.

Hi Jay, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
FOCUS Enrichment stands for Figuring Out Communication through Understanding and Support. By profession, I am a psychotherapist that specializes in working with LGBTQ+ and couple relationships. Throughout my 10 years of practice, I have recognized too many patterns of couples lacking foundational skills to manage and enhance communication barriers.

The majority of couples I see are highly distressed and on the verge of separating or divorce. Among couples are also my LGBTQ+ clients who are often single and struggling to connect for reasons surrounding you guessed it… communication issues. I identify as a gay male and also recognized a lack of space for the LGBTQ+ to build deeper connections outside of an app or the bar scene.

By night, I am the Co-owner of a local ballroom dance studio in Downtown Mesa called AZ Ballroom Dance Academy. Our mission is to work with everyone no matter what height, weight, shape, size, or gender preference. As ballroom teachers, we often see couples and singles learning how to lead and follow while trusting a partner to create art on the dance floor.

This is only achieved in how we communicate verbally and nonverbally. One day, I was working with a wedding couple that had difficulty learning the steps because of the lack of communication and trust in their partner dancing. At that moment I decided to try some communication exercises that I use in my practice. I dance as an analogy for them to understand.

It was a huge success and they left feeling more competent in their steps which enhanced the relationship. I thought, how amazing would it be to combine both my passions for couples in mental health and ballroom dance together?! That same night, I had a dream about FOCUS Enrichment with the acronym and woke up in the middle of the night to write down my concept on a napkin.

FOCUS Enrichment was then created and set forth into motion ever since.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any business will have its challenges and FOCUS Enrichment has not been the exception.

First, this concept was created in the midst of pandemics and my dance studio was already transitioning with virtual elements due to city ordinances and fear of the virus.

Secondly, it was difficult to navigate how I wanted to popularize this workshop when couples already felt vulnerable dancing. Then, we are going to discuss communication too!? It was tricky, but the business plan finally worked out!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
FOCUS Enrichment is a relational coaching service and stands for Finding Out Communication through Understanding and Support. Our mission is to enhance relationships by giving individuals the safe space and tools to communicate through a variety of workshops and events.

FOCUS Enrichment is led by a team of relationship coaches and facilitators who teach social and communication skills to foster healthier relationships and build higher self-esteem. We offer services in relational coaching, mixers, and communication workshops for parent-child and couples.

The workshops are designed around communication but have the element of ballroom dance where individuals learn to communicate on/off the dance floor. Ballroom dance is like a relationship where two people come together to communicate, and our coaches alongside ballroom instructors help with that.

We also hold mixers for the LGBT community to create safe spaces for them to connect to others that are interested in building deeper connections whether it be platonic or romantic. Our coaches provide resources for the future if people want to continue building skills and have additional support.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I have learned is to trust and enjoy the process of building a business. As entrepreneurs, it is easy to get caught up in the “end goal” without realizing that the hard work we have been putting in is actually the most rewarding.

The goals and milestones that are hit are only for moments in time, but the process is where the growth occurs. I have also realized that when goals are met, a enterpetenuer is then thinking about the next thing. However, we often do not highlight the achievement we were only dreaming about before as an idea!

It is important to slow down and recognize the talent, effort, and journey we are on. I have realized in building business a supportive team is kep. I trust the people around me which makes me trust the results.
