Meet Tamra Wyman of Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical in North Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamra Wyman.

Tamra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began working at a very young age for my parents. From helping out in their machine shop to manufacturing wooden toy barns for the Breyer model horses, I developed a strong work ethic and knowledge for business. My sister and I helped my parents in the toy barn business from assembling the barns, packaging little accessories and to helping with the shipment to retailers. When we turned from manufacturing to retail, we began the building of the website where we began to sell online to the public and expanded our toy offerings to Ertl toy tractors, Corolle Dolls. Peg Perego ride-ons and thousands of other specialty toy lines. Eventually, the 30,000 sq. ft. building turned into a Halloween Costume warehouse. We did all the customer service, web site modifications (at the start), social media, overseeing of the warehouse and operations, and general running of the business as my parents starting visiting their 2nd home in Arizona more and more. I have my parents and their business to thank for my knowledge in running business.

I married a man with 17 years of plumbing experience and we moved to Arizona once I became pregnant with our first child. My parents decided to retire when my sister’s and my interests took us away from the Halloween costume industry. After they gave me a few months’ notice on closing their doors, I began looking at other business opportunities. I decided to use my experience and investment funds to start up a local plumbing company. And the rest is history!

Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think the starting of a new business is ever a smooth road. There are always challenges and struggles along the way. We have grown much more quickly than I expected and I think that has been the biggest struggle. Finding qualified plumbers in the North Phoenix Valley is very challenging. Within a year, we have grown from 1 plumber to 4 plumbers. As we continue to grow and the demand for our services increases, it is sometimes hard to have enough technicians available. We all do work as hard as possible and sometimes late hours to get the more urgent jobs answered. We are looking to combat this by getting more involved in High School programs to speak as plumbing professionals and encourage the up and coming generation to look at learning a trade. Whether it is an electrician, HVAC technician, plumber, jewelry, locksmith … finding a skilled tradesman in today’s world, it is a sought after field to be in!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a state-licensed, bonded and insured full service plumbing company. We are based out of Anthem, AZ and service the entire North Valley. Everything from residential to commercial and service work to new construction. Our service scope includes water heaters (gas, electric, tankless), water softeners, Reverse Osmosis drinking water systems, gas lines, drain cleans, camera inspections, rough-in work, and your general plumbing services such as toilets, faucets, sinks, etc. Our friendly customer service, great workmanship and family-like team sets us apart from the other plumbers. With our smaller service area (North Valley), we are able to get to know the neighborhoods (water pressure issues, familiar with area water quality, etc) and our customers. Most of our business comes from referrals, so when John tells us that Susie refers us, we can all feel like neighbors helping other neighbors. It really is a small world when you have the ability to really get to know your service area. Check out all our 5-star ratings on Google, Yelp, Facebook, Angie’s List and NextDoor, to name a few. There is so much to love and I feel the main underlying reason is we really care and we are here for our customers!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Phoenix is a great place for growth. It recently ranks the #5 biggest city in the USA on a recent announcement I heard on the radio. I wouldn’t have guessed it, though, as so many of its suburbs have that small town feel. There is so many people moving in and making Phoenix there home, that it leaves a lot of opportunity for those looking to become a business owner. If you believe in your product and stand behind what you sell/provide, the sky is the limit!
