Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Brown Thelen.
Susan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Susan Brown’s Baby came first. My father’s company (International Flora Technologies aka IFT) has been producing natural and unique botanically derived ingredients for some of the best-known skincare companies in the world such as Estée Lauder®, Chanel®, Clinique®, L’Oreal®, and Neutrogena®. Several years ago, we turned these botanical ingredients (jojoba, moringa, sunflower, macadamia) into a line of skincare products. What makes us different from our competitors is that we can afford to put more of these natural botanicals into our products because we get them at cost from my father’s company.
Blister Balm was started about three years ago with an ingredient that IFT sells. This product is called hydrolyzed jojoba esters. These hydrolyzed jojoba esters were created due to a mistake. After their creation, they were analyzed and discovered to have a naturally occurring docosanol in them. Docosanol is an ingredient that helps diminish cold sore outbreaks. IFT then sent then sent the hydrolyzed jojoba esters to be tested on the HSV-1 (cold sore) virus against a leading brand. The results came back that the hydrolyzed jojoba esters were 50xs more effective than the key ingredient in the leading brand.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No. Some struggles have been that the retail environment has changed a lot over the past ten years and still continues to change. A lot of our brick and mortar customers have gone out of business. Some of the retailers are always wanting product for cheaper and it is hard to meet those demands because we have such quality ingredients in our products. It is hard to find brokers and buyers that want to take on new lines of product.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Susan Brown’s Baby sells natural skincare for baby and mom. Blister Balm is a 100% natural cold sore treatment. Both lines contain jojoba and other natural botanical ingredients. I run the day to day operations that include such things as filling orders, marketing, procurement and social media. What I am most proud of is that we have unique products with unique stories and we can offer these to people to help them with their skincare needs.
For Susan Brown’s Baby, what makes us different from our competitors is that we can afford to put more natural botanicals into our products because we get them at cost from my father’s company. What makes Blister Balm different is that it is the only natural anti-viral on the market. Or in other words, it is the only NATURAL product on the market that is effective against the HSV-1 (cold sore) virus.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very shy. My interests included playing sports, spending time with family and friends. Having a company has helped me overcome my shyness for the most part.
