Meet Steve Ayotte

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Ayotte.

Steve, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story is similar to most kids, I think. I was enrolled in music classes at a young age, fell in love with performing, and never really stopped. Piano when I was my first instrument. I think I was in 3rd or 4th grade (so about 9 or 10 years old) when my parents started me out. I joined the school band playing trumpet in the 5th grade and I continued playing in school up until my first year in college. My love for playing and performing carried on into forming a rock band in my freshman year of college. Trumpet didn’t fit the vibe of the rock band so I took a swing at singing. We weren’t very good; none of us had played the instruments we were performing on, but we loved it and started playing backyard shows right away for friends and family.

Eventually, we got a little better and were invited to perform at local bars and venues. My passion only grew from there! The band went through a lot of changes and, as most bands do, the final members parted ways, leaving me to figure out my path with music and life.

Rather than writing off a career in music, I picked up a guitar, taught myself how to play just enough songs to perform a three hour solo gig, and started playing one Friday night a month to make a little extra cash. That one show a month turned into one show a week, that turned into 10 shows a month, that now has me at roughly 300 shows a year in four different states.

Its been quite the journey but I think all the grinding and scraping by at the beginning has proved to myself music and performing is my true calling. I don’t think I’d be very good at too many other things!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest hurdle was finding the right team of people to build my success with and the first piece of that puzzle was ME. I had to allow myself to be open-minded to the path that was right for my future success and happiness.

Here’s the deal. Being young and a musician in a band, its more about the fun you’re having in that exact moment. Which is always an important aspect of any part of life, but no one thinks about the long term when you’re jamming out in a garage and one is with your buddies. You think that moment will never end and you don’t have to think about anything else. As time goes on and people’s focus shift you’re often left alone having to start from scratch. Repeated occurrences of that become very disheartening and lead most people to quit and go an easier route, a route that has less uncertainty.

I was no different than every other young musician that battled members quitting, creative minds clashing, friendships being uprooted by selfishness, and so many other hurdles. The thing that set me apart from the rest is that I didn’t know what it was to quit! A career in music was always my path and nothing was going to stop me even if I didn’t know how exactly to be successful. I just stuck with it and chipped away at what I have today. Now I’m reaping the benefits. It’s still a lot of work but I love being my boss and I love the dynamic I have with all the people I perform with, the venues and companies I work in conjunction with, and the behind the scenes individuals that make so much of what I do possible.

The stars took their time to align and I’m so glad I didn’t give up before they did!

Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
My company has two elements: Performances and Entertainment Services. On the Performance side, I am a multi-instrumentalist that does live-looping and remixes/mashes up Top 40’s songs spanning all time eras and genres. I perform solo (Steve Ayotte Music), as a duo (Two Dudes AZ), and as a full band (3-5 piece group called Steve Ayotte & The Get down). What makes me and my groups different is that you will never hear our version of these songs you are familiar with and love performed anywhere else. We bring a unique energy and approach to popular songs. Thankfully people seem to gravitate to my versions!

On the Entertainment Services side, I offer booking options for clients that have specific needs for their events outside of me performing live or if I am personally unavailable. I offer anything from live music to DJ services and can accommodate anything from small intimate events to large scale corporate functions. I am a full service, self-contained operation.

Being able to cover so many areas allows me to execute my clients’ exact vision, which in turn makes it possible for me to create the perfect vibe at every event. I am most proud of my versatility, attention to detail, open-mindedness, and flexibility when it comes to making every event exactly what the client wants and needs.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Oh man, I had a pretty great childhood so I can’t pick one. Playing piano with my mom, exploring the national forest of Northern Arizona on dirt-bikes, family vacations to the beaches of South Padre Island in Texas or the mountains in Colorado & Oregon; the list could go on and on. Id likes to think my connection with my family and the overall good vibes of my childhood helped me become a well rounded adult who wants to connect and work well with others around me.
