Today we’d like to introduce you to Sky Nuttall.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am an Arizona transplant that loves everything about photography! As a teenager, I sold candy bars and participated in other fundraisers to be able to travel to Europe and South America. Here is where my passion in photography really started. My bright orange and blue tour backpack would be full of film canisters every trip. The pictures I captured were the most important thing that made it back home with me, and I couldn’t wait to get my film developed to see what pictures I caught. My photography class in high school was by far my favorite course. There is nothing quite like processing film in a dark room! I loved continuing my education in photography by taking classes at a neat photography store in Salt Lake City. I have never been able to decide if I love photographing landscape and nature or people more. I love the relationships that I have been able to cultivate with different clients from capturing special moments like their wedding day, newborn baby, senior pics, or family photo shoot, I also love visiting new places and capturing pictures of the beautiful landscape or architecture native and special to that location. My husband and family are just used to finding me on my back in a pathway or in the middle of a flower garden in order to get the perfect shot.
Please tell us about your art.
I have a hard time narrowing my passion when it comes to photography. I love capturing events and special moments for people so I do photoshoots and give the people I work with access to the digital files of the images I capture. I also love photographing nature and places and make enlargements of my work on different mediums (standard print, metal, canvas, and acrylic), along with stationery sets and matted prints. I want others to be able to have priceless moments or places captured in a photograph that they can treasure for years to come. When I take pictures of people, I love providing them with shots capturing their smile, excitement, confidence, or love. When I take pictures of nature of landscapes, I like creating artwork that instills a sense of peace or beauty in the form of a print that can be enjoyed in a very visual sense on a wall, or a simple card that the recipient can enjoy from a friend.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Start small. It’s so easy to feel consumed and overwhelmed by all the materials you may need to follow your passion, but the talent is there so just start with the basics and gradually build as you go along. I thought I had to have the best camera and lens before I could start charging people to take their pictures, but I just used what I had and have never regretted just getting started! It’s also easy to not make time to follow your artistic path because work and other demands get in the way, but you’d be surprised how much you can grow and progress just by devoting something as simple as 15 minutes a day to your passion and what you love to do!
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can see my work on my website or Facebook and Instagram pages. I also just took part in my first art showcase and loved being able to set up my work for event goers to see. I plan on displaying my work at more venues like that so others can see my work in person. It has been such a treat to have followers look through my website and interact with my work through my social media platforms. There is nothing more exciting in my day than seeing a follower share a post or comment on a posted picture!
