Today we’d like to introduce you to Tabitha Dumas.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tabitha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in the south and was “prissy” from as far back as preschool when I insisted on wearing dresses to school every day. I came from a long line of women who love shopping and fashion and who were also crafters and bargain hunters. I’ve been every size from a two to a sixteen-plus and I’ve enjoyed color, clothes and accessories at every size. As a mother of two young sons in 2009, I found myself feeling anxious and depleted so my husband and I dropped everything, sold a car, sold our house and moved into a rental in Phoenix to take a year off so I could get a fresh start. At that time, I found a book about style and color and decided it was time for me to start taking better care of ME. I cut my hair into an angled bob, shopped for new skinny jeans, bought some tops I loved and started enjoying getting dressed again. That was the catalyst to reclaiming my life and my identity. I soon met the author of the book and started training as an image consultant, blogging about image and beauty tips and meeting with women in person to do color analysis and wardrobe planning. As a long-time blogger and writer, I also worked with women on their online image and even did some ghost blogging and business copywriting. I was finding my niche — women with heart-based businesses who wanted to look and feel confident so they could achieve their goals. In 2011, we moved back to the east valley and I worked on building a business around the concept that is now my tagline: “Elevate your image. Expand your influence.” Whether writing, shopping, teaching, speaking or facilitating workshops, I find that half my work is about image and the other half about influence. It thrills me to give women the confidence to live their dream.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the challenges I’ve faced over ten years of finding my place is simply to allow my business to grow and adjust without getting stuck on the idea that it’s ever perfect or “done.” My main goal is always to serve my clients well in a way that suits my season of life so I have to constantly adjust the sails to stay on track. I’m OK with that and my readers, customers, and cohorts have come to appreciate that I’m always improving and innovating to keep things fresh.
I’ve also been a mother all these years of running a business so I’ve learned there’s no such thing as balance. Every day is a new chance to juggle home, family and work and no two days are the same. Some days, work comes first so I can meet a deadline or host an event. On other days, clients are reminded that family comes first so I can miss a meeting to attend a school field trip. I’m grateful that my family and my clients allow me to go with the flow.
Signature Color Style – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is under the umbrella of TabithaDumas.com because I know my offerings and my focus will morph over time. I am what you might call “multi-passionate” and I am known for being “out there” (online and in the community) while maintaining a peaceful, simple life. In any given week, I write on my blog or for East Valley Moms Blog, hold color analysis appointments in my home studio, speak to a group of women on color confidence, teach a workshop on Pinterest for business, hold a personal shopping appointment, co-host a faith-based networking group, meet with a few cohorts, update my social media accounts and have a friend over for tea. My ladies often say, I “get their wheels turning” and inspire them to take action. That’s my magic, I think–giving women the confidence to step into their purpose. Little makes me happier than helping a woman live up to her potential.
What I’m most known for is Signature Color Style. As a Certified Image Consultant, it’s a system I developed that starts with Discover Your Signature Color which also tells them their unique Color Code (Light, Deep, Soft, Clear, Cool or Warm) and their Signature Color so they can then determine a wardrobe color palette to refine their wardrobe, shop on purpose and enjoy getting dressed again. From there we go shopping together (I shop WITH them, not for them) or I go into her closet for an overhaul.
I’m also unique because my passion is working with the women I do life with, right here in the Phoenix valley. I try to be down-to-earth, accessible and affordable. I refuse to monetize my blog and I offer an entire resource page for free because I truly want to help women without complicating it with the distraction of ads, fancy programs or sales funnels. I don’t even use an online booking service — I tell my ladies to just call or text me! In addition, my pricing structure has options for paying my regular price, double the price or zero so everyone can utilize my services. Because of that, my clients often become friends.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
One of my proud moments so far was when I hosted Style School for twelve ladies in downtown Gilbert at my friend and cohort’s cottage. I brought in a local photographer to talk about posing for pictures and a hair stylist to talk about hairstyles to suit different face shapes. We played with makeup, found our most flattering hem lengths, explored wearing new colors and ate lunch together. The ladies that came were from all different parts of my life — life group ladies, an old friend from the west valley, a gal who runs a non-profit I spoke for, my mom and even one stranger. Everyone left as friends!
