Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn and Larie Dowdy.
Shawn and Larie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We started as a family business and are a brother and sister team. Our parents are visionaries and entrepreneurs. They started an HVAC, Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning, business over 33 years ago. Our family has grown up in the business and have always worked hard for what we have achieved. We had an opportunity and after many years we were able to purchase a building for our business. Our building has 2 suites and for years we occupied and ran HVAC business out of one suite and would lease the other suite out to help pay for the building. We did this for years.
Through blessings and a little luck, we were given the opportunity to dream up this venture. That’s where it all started. We were in an in-between place with renters and through cleaning and tenant abatement the idea came to mind. We felt if other business were successful in the space then why couldn’t we? So, the first thought was something I am very passionate about and have kept myself involved in my whole life, Fitness. It has always been a dream of mine to open and own a fitness club. Helping people young and old achieve their fitness goals, athletic dreams & improvement of health was what we decided we were going to do. It has taken a year and a half to build after work, weekends and any spare time was put into building it from the ground up. From flooring to lights and everything in between. We built, bought, bartered and borrowed whatever it took to complete the vision for what we had in mind. Every ounce of energy, every penny we had went into the creation of Compound Fitness.
As the months passed and we were continually showed the signs of being on the right path, the place started to take shape. As we got closer to building completion, we decided to add another element and begin to build our cafe. So not only were we building 1 business, but now we were building 2. Day by day things started to materialize. Names were generated and logos. Ideas came when we put pen to paper.
As the shift went to the business side of things, we begin to build our brands all the while still building and adding touches of flair and working on giving our place some needed personality. We are still adding, taking away and seeing what works and fits for us but we now have all the business brands and daily operations in place. We can now work on promoting and getting the word out and the people in and let this amazing idea we’ve created grow organically.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was a challenge to make the vision come through on minimal resources, energy & time. We worked long days and nights squeezing work time in where we could find it while maintaining a separate livelihood. Many personal, financial & health-based sacrifices were made. Staying focused, on track and believing there was going to be a light at the end of the tunnel was a daily challenge. When a person has minimal resources, meaning money, you have to get creative and learn to do and build things on your own. Many creative ideas were implemented to design and build what we needed and the anything we couldn’t do or build we bartered, traded, hustled & reconditioned. It was a huge learning experience in directions we never thought we’d have to go but were necessary to an overall successful completion.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Compound Fitness story. Tell us more about the business.
We have built an athletic training health and wellness club. Not a gym, much more. We want to offer many phases of training health and wellness.
We offer group and 1 on 1 based training and classes for all levels of fitness. We have a very large variety of training capabilities and amenities. We are a hybrid facility with our focus being all around fitness and health. Our in-house juice and macro-nutrient cafe, Press N Plate, provides our community a healthy affordable option tailored to fit their nutritional needs. We pride our business on being cutting edge and a model to the next generations of fitness. It’s not just about the training – it’s the whole package. We provide our community a new age approach and strategy as an ongoing lifestyle. We build you better from the inside out. Part of what we offer that sets us apart is our attention to recovery.
We have an infrared sauna, hydrotherapy whirlpool and a steam pod. We have the capabilities of breaking the body down in an efficient, effective manner and the skills needed to aid in healing and recovery which in the end translates to building a stronger, healthier you! Our vision is to help and support our communities’ health and fitness needs. We care about our athletes and members. We are a one stop health and fitness Mecca in their lives for the long haul not just the here and now. We are not a specialized or fad gym. We are a complete wellness compound dedicated to improving the lives of our community.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’ve always said “I’d rather be good than lucky, but that doesn’t stop me from kissing a rabbit’s foot from time to time.”
We didn’t rely on luck or put a lot of faith in it. We knew hard work would get us where we needed to be. Fortunately, through hard work we created opportunity and put ourselves in a position where luck could find us and it did. We were lucky in finding great deals and acquiring many of the pieces of equipment we wanted. It almost seemed as if things were falling in our lap purposefully.
That is how we knew our path was the right one. I feel like a person creates their luck or lack of by the decisions they make and how they live their life. We’ve all felt the lows and those “unlucky” or bad luck times we think are a curse, but if you rely on luck – life’s a crap-shoot. We took control of our situation and made the commitment to change and grow. Once that commitment was made we knew no luck – good or bad, would stop us from our plan.
