Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Sieker.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ryan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was very young I would shovel snow from driveways in the winter, mow lawns in the summer, and rake leaves in the fall. I sold candy after lunch in Junior High, and in High School, I worked several jobs, one of which was IT support for local small businesses. I would repair computers, setup networks, install software etc. In college I got an internship for a packaging company in their IT department supporting 100+ users. After graduating with an engineering degree in electronics, I moved from Indiana to Arizona and had several post college jobs, finally landing one as an on-site IT repair technician.
Soon thereafter, I was getting my own clients and started my first company doing technology consulting for local businesses in the Phoenix area. At first I was only doing IT related work, but as I acquired more business, customers were asking for more services, like web design and digital marketing. I started designing web sites and taking on more marketing clients and fell in love with those services. Eventually I was only doing web, SEO and marketing services.
Along this same timeline a friend of mine and his brother had started a company and were in need of web and marketing services. I took on their company as a contract at first and eventually started working there full time as the CTO helping accelerate the company’s growth for the first several years, integrating new process and marketing strategies. I kept my consulting business on the side, growing it to 4 full time employees, but eventually directed my main focus on the e-commerce company with the 2 brothers. In 2014 we took the product all the way to big box retail across the country in over 1000 stores.
Also while all of this was happening at the e-commerce company another friend of mine had started his own business, and had expanded it into 2 separate companies. He was in need of someone to take on the day to day responsibilities of Float Pod and recruited me to come on board as President. The timing was right for both companies and I made the move to Float Pod, staying on as a consultant for the e-commerce company to help with issues as needed.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many obstacles along the way. During my time at the e-commerce company, many competitors came into the market and we had to improve and adapt our products many different times to stay relevant and regain market share. It was also a struggle working with big box retail and after spending all that time, money and effort to get in, we decided to stay out. We had a competitor DDOS our website during a busy time of the season causing us to lose lots of traffic and customers during that time. I had to scramble and learn how to mitigate on of these attacks and get our site back up and running. There are issues every single day in business, I just accept them as part of the package, fix them as fast as I can and move on to the next one.
Float Pod Technologies – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At Float Pod we manufacture and distribute float tanks, aka float pods. These are sensory deprivation devices used for healing, meditation, stress relief, spirituality, and much more. Our products are great not only because of the quality, but because of the passion and dedication of our staff. Many people who buy our products are first time business owners and we take the extra time to help them along the way, starting them on their business journey. Providing amazing products by amazing people is what we do best.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
A business can sell all kinds of products to make money, but very rarely does a company sell a product that actually helps people. I’m very proud of our products because at the end of the day, the product helps people. The feedback has been incredible. We hear story after story of life changing experiences and the positive effects of our product. Knowing every day our team is part of putting something good into the world makes me proud.
