Meet Ruth Leatherman and Shelley Curtis of New York Bagels ‘N Bialys in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Leatherman and Shelley Curtis.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ruth and Shelley. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Shelley and I met when I went to work at McDonald’s back in New Jersey. We visited Arizona one Christmas and fell in love with the Phoenix area. We purchased New York Bagels ‘N Bialys in 2005 and just went gang busters from there. We relocated the Deli in 2008 to its present location, converted the bakery to Kosher in 2010, opened a grab and go store in Tempe in 2015 and are now getting ready to open our next big location at SkySong McDowell and Scottsdale Roads in November.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Owning a business is never a smooth road. As soon as you get everything set a new challenge pops up. Our biggest struggle is finding great employees. Minimum wage increases have made the situation harder as the entry level employee is making what would have been a trained staff member last year. Back door pricing has gone up exponentially as well. Balancing all that with great customer service and great food is the key to doing what we know and what we love.

Please tell us about New York Bagels ‘N Bialys.
We are a bagel bakery and deli. We boil and bake our bagels to get the dense, chewy bagel with a crust that is the New York tradition everyone expects. We have taken a small business and expanded our wholesale to all over the valley! We are now opening our third restaurant and deli and are excited to see what else the future brings.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
We think anything would be easier…dresses don’t go bad, rental properties you don’t have to deal with every day and office workers get off weekends. Than being said –we wouldn’t change a thing.
