Today we’d like to introduce you to Rudy Jaime.
Rudy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The original Electrik Needle was opened in 1974 in Phoenix when there were only 5 tattoo shops in the whole metropolitan Phoenix area. In 1992, I started my apprenticeship at the Electrik Needle under Cookie’s supervision. One night when I was driving home from tattooing all night I was hit by a drunk driver.
Luckily, I was ok, but I took the settlement money and opened the second Electrik Needle in Prescott Valley, AZ in 1996. Unfortunately, the original Electrik Needle closed several years back after Cookie had retired. This left the void in the Phoenix area, so four years ago I brought the Electrik Needle back to Phoenix and opened my second studio in the heart of the art and culture district of downtown Phoenix.
Has it been a smooth road?
With any business, there have been struggles. I started tattooing when the internet was not even a thing in the industry. Tattooing culture has evolved over the years with the internet, Pinterest, reality tattoo shows, and more artists going to school for art.
When I first started tattooing people came in and picked a piece of flash off the wall and that is what they got. Now, all of my work is custom and is designed to fit the needs of each customer. This has increased the time that I spend researching and drawing before a people even comes in to get tattooed.
There are so many more shops now than there was back in the day. Phoenix went from having 5 shops to having over 500 shops in the Phoenix metropolitan area. There is more marketing and social media that is needed to get your name and art own there with so many shops.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Electrik Needle Tattoo – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The Electrik Needle is one of the oldest tattoo shops in Arizona. I specialize in color, blackwork, and cover-ups. I enjoy tattoo flowers, animals, and even minimalist tattoos. The possibilities are endless when it comes to making peoples tattoo ideas into a permanent piece of art.
Recently, I have gotten into spray paint art. I enjoy working with all types of mediums when it comes to my art. I am wanting to help people create outdoor spaces at their house that they can enjoy. I have opened AZ Spray Art Evolution to begin painting signs and murals for people.
I am proud that my business has stood the test of time during the recession and other economic struggles that this country has gone through.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I truly get both worlds by living in beautiful Prescott Valley and Phoenix AZ during the week. I am an AZ native and AZ will always be home.
