Meet Roshi Patel of RSP Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roshi Patel.

Hi Roshi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Roshi! I am an AZ native and currently a senior at ASU studying elementary education. I have always loved doing art since I was a kid. It was one of those hobbies where I would lose track of time and get so engrossed in what I was working on. As life got busy, art got put on the backburner. However, during quarantine, I had so much free time (as we all can relate to) which helped me rediscover my love for art and creativity. I was doing an art piece every day and started sharing these on my personal Instagram. People responded so positively and eventually I had friends ask for custom pieces. My friends pushed me to make an art Instagram account and so I did! After several months, I started to realize I really wanted to focus on lettering, so I rebranded my page. This is how RSP Designs begun in February! I kept working at it and posting content until things quickly just took off. Before I knew it, I was working with all sorts of vendors and event planners across the valley, doing styled shoots, collabs, etc.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the first 2 months when I started RSP Designs, I did not have any orders. I had many inquiries, but nothing stuck. However, I kept posting example content and showing what I could do. When April hit, things just exploded. I was getting orders right and left. I was so thankful I persisted because I had many doubts from the start. I didn’t know if this was something that would turn into a real business or if people would like my work. I think every small business owner has these fears at the beginning, but it’s something you have to stay relentless with. My business was all I thought about, but it didn’t feel like “work.” That is how I knew this was something I needed to invest my time in to see where it would lead. I knew I would have regretted it if I had given up.

Another big struggle is comparing my work to other artists. It’s easy to fall into this trap of thinking your work is not as good as other well-established businesses in the same field. I have learned that it is so important to be proud of what you do and the energy you have invested in your craft.

We’ve been impressed with RSP Designs, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
RSP Designs is your place for hand-lettering and calligraphy. Everything I sell is handmade by me. I specialize in acrylic event signage such as wedding welcome signs, bar menus, etc. I create all sorts of other products such as custom denim jackets, vow books, keychains, and chalkboards. Basically, I can provide custom lettering on almost any product. What I love most about what RSP Designs has to offer is the full range of customizability. This goes from colors to text to size. RSP Designs makes your vision come to life!

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
One of my main helpers, Arianna, has been my best friend since 3rd grade. From day 1, she has helped me with photo editing and giving me second opinions on everything I create. I always like to have a 2nd eye look at my work; Arianna is my go-to. I am also very appreciative of my other best friend, Emmy. She has been my biggest cheerleader and likes to call herself a “proud mom.” We have been through thick and thin together and I am so grateful for her support. Lastly, I owe much of my success to my family. My parents and my brother are always so supportive and cheering me on. My mom is my go-to with my finances and I have a lot to learn from her. She has helped me navigate the “business” side and I am incredibly thankful. I have a wonderful support system and I truly wouldn’t be where I am without them.
