Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron Poncin.
Ron, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Starting my walk thru life, raised on a grain and livestock farm in northern Iowa. Attended the same school K-12. Tech school for diesel mechanics.
Pulled wrenches at IH for a few years. Sold veterinary pharmaceuticals for a few years Moved to AZ in January of 1987. Went to work for Total Lawn Care in Mesa, Az. After a couple of years, I purchased that company from Wayne Bouton. TLC was a commercial landscape maintenance company. We grew the company to 20 employees and added an installation division. Sold that company in September of 2003.
Moved to McCall, Idaho. Thought I wanted 4 seasons again. Wrong!
Moved back to Queen Creek, Az. in October of 2005. Been here since.
Worked for a commercial nursery for a short time. Mostly to learn the growing experience.
Started Bella Terra Landscapes in August of 2006. Alongside with my wife Marie Alessio. Started to grow nursery stock on our acreage at this time also.
Bella Terra Landscapes is a residential landscape installation company. We also do small commercial install and maintenance. We have our small nursery (4-5000 plants and trees) that we grow for our installs and the public.
After 30 years, I still love the work that I do. I am also into farming. I own 200 acres of the richest farmland in the world in Iowa. Have plans to do Hydroponic Grow greenhouses with my brother.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road of life is not always smooth. Owning your own business always has trials and tribulations.
Been married a few times. Divorce is always a downfall on the money side. Went completely broke from 3rd marriage, but have recovered fine.
The housing crash of 2008 was a killer. Glad we had the nursery. That was our sustaining part to get us thru. People couldn’t afford our services so they came and bought trees and plants and did things themselves.
As a whole, I feel it is just what life is. Pull yourself back up and get moving!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Bella Terra Landscapes – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We have a small nursery that grows around 4-5000 trees and plants. Depending on season. Our nursery has become popular with many of the locals. Specialty work is plants and trees, irrigation and pavers. My nursery is my pride and joy. it is what I really love doing. Not to take anything away from the landscaping.
I’ve been growing things my whole life. As a child in second grade, I grew cucumbers in our garden and sold them to the local grocer for 5 cents each.
What sets us apart? We are a small company with 9 people. We offer a very personal attitude. We take care of things. We are totally involved with this. We know what the hell we are doing! (Unlike so many that don’t know.)
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I have been experimenting with hydroponic vegetables. Looking forward to this in the way of farmers markets, restaurant supply, maybe a local coop. Planning large hydroponic greenhouse grows in Iowa of leafy greens. Possibly soil grown commodities.
