Meet Deanna Melnychuk of The Rolfing Centre in North Central

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deanna Melnychuk.

Deanna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When a voice in my head said, “If you keep doing what you are doing, you will die. I began to exam my life as a Business Systems Manager in a large corporation in Canada. In the search to restore my own health, I began the 10-sessions of Rolfing (R) Structural Integration. After 3 sessions, I realized that I wished to give to others what was being given to me–vitality, efficiency and ease in movement, better posture and coordination. Within 6 months, I had sold my house, left my position and moved to Boulder, CO to begin my studies.

Not wishing to return to Canada, I began to research where I might open my practice. An opportunity presented itself in Phoenix and I began to give Rolfing sessions here in 1995–always growing my own skills through continuing education as I was growing my practice. Today, after 23 years of Rolfing SI, Rolfing Movement, and Cranial Sacral Therapy, my love for this work continues to deepen as does my ability to facilitate change in other people’s bodies.

Many of my clients come because of chronic pain, accidents or surgery. Some realize their poor posture is limiting their life and are seeking relief. All ages from children to seniors benefit from Rolfing which lengthens their connective tissue and releases long-held patterns of tension.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One might say the first obstacle was to quite a well-paying job, sell my mortgage-free house and all its furnishings, pack a Honda Civic, drive three days to Boulder, CO and begin my Rolfing training. When people would say to me, “You were so courageous,” I would respond. “Not really, I just knew it was what I had to do.” Martha Beck, author and former client, told me, “You had found your true north star.” (She wrote about me in her book, “Finding your North Star.)

Second challenge was living on $1,000/month with rent of $525–biking in Boulder is encouraged, healthy, and inexpensive!

Third challenge was leaving beautiful Boulder (where Rolfers are in abundance) and moving to the desert…Phoenix…where there are less than 15 Rolfers.

In the process of learning how to market myself, I “traded” with a computer specialist who set up my website in 1997 even before the Rolf Institute had their website. However, I did make some marketing mistakes (like advertising on Safeway grocery bags). Marketing successes were Groupon and BNI. Public speaking about Rolfing is always great fun and folks are interested but it did not net me strong clients.

The people I have met and the chiropractic clinics I have worked in have all created a strong community of like-minded, health-conscious people. This has been my greatest resource.

The Rolfing Centre – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Dr. Ida P. Rolf developed Rolfing (R) Structural Integration over a period of 50 years. She found that by lengthening the myofascial system in the body, her client’s posture, energy, coordination, and vitality improved dramatically. In order to teach her ideas to others, she wrote a book “Rofing: Reestablishing the Natural Alignment and Structural Integration of the Human Body for Vitality and Well-Being,” and she created the 10-session Series.

When my body at age 52 was exhausted, bent over with joints aching and head forward, I started to seek for answers outside the medical model. As a logical manager in a computers operations department, I was skeptical that my body could rejuvenate itself. However, after 3 sessions with my Rolfer (TM), I asked her “how do I become a Rolfer.” I was hooked on feeling good. Never looked back. It just gets better.

I combine Rolfing, cranial sacral and Reiki modalities to facilitate a healing of body, mind, spirit. As our connective tissues lengthens and becomes more supple, we experience a sense of well-being…aches and pains disappear and sometimes long forgotten memories resurface and dissipate.

What I am most delighted with is that since I moved to Phoenix in 1995, Rolfing has been my sole support. I have never had to supplement with other work…my schedule has always been full.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
When my client’s body changes and they stand straighter, when they tell me they are out of pain, when they take my advice to throw away their flip flops, when they participate in creating permanent change, when they come back after years or when they are a regular client for quarterly tune-ups after the 10 sessions. All these tell me I am doing what I am meant to be doing. Also when each night I feel I have had a great day and still love what I do. That, to me, is success!
