Meet Roberto Murphy of RMS Timelapse Photography in Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roberto Murphy.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Roberto. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born in 1986 in a beautiful, small and folkloric town near Mexico City called Cholula, My mother was born in a small farmland town in Minnesota and had met my dad in College. My father was born and raised in Mexico City by an American military Doctor and a remarkable and fascinating Mexican mother who is still alive and holds a Ph.D. in Nuclear Medicine. Because of my mother being 100% American I was granted the dual citizenship at birth.

I graduated as a mechanical engineer in the UDLAP and after a few years I decided I would try my luck in the US, I left Mexico chasing a life that I would love every second of, a life that would allow me to do photography, to explore nature, travel, be in awe and be able to express and share that with the world.

I stayed with an Uncle in the small town of Woodruff, SC. There I spent almost 4 months isolated and looking for a job. My first offer was to come to Phoenix and work for a company dedicated to industrial maintenance, I took it, I worked in this industry for about 4 years and recently decided to dedicate myself 100% to my passions and my life.
I created RMS Time-lapse Photography in March 2017 and in October, without any savings and without any backup plan I decided to quit my job and force myself to find a way to make it work.

I know it sounds irresponsible and foolish, but I’m a simple person. I don’t spend more than what I have and I haven’t acquired any significant debts beside the usual, car insurance, cellphone, rent. The thing is I realized that we only have one life and that we often decide to live scared but safe rather than risk and fail. I realized that if you don’t have the courage to live the life you want then you simply don’t deserve it. I realized that I had left my family and friends for this so I could not fail.

One of the main motivators for helping me do this in such an “irresponsible” and abrupt way was a quote by Joseph Campbell “Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls”. So far it has been a huge challenge but fortunately magic has been in the air and we have some work lined up for December and awesome, kind hearted people have come across the way and they’ve seen the passion and fire that fuels me and I believe it is only a matter of time before it starts to grow.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think one of the biggest challenges I’ve come across yet is that I have found this passion and this desire and I think finding a way to make a profit out of it and knowing how to get proper exposure are hard subjects. I think that one of the things you have to do is try try try. I have had a Shopify store which has generated virtually no money. I have sold one print since March when I opened it. I have made bad investments and have had people charge me to do easy work just because of my ignorance. So I think that learning empirically and finding a way to market your work are two of the hardest challenges I’ve had to deal with.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
RMS Time-lapse Photography is a company dedicated to the production of time lapses, photography and video. At the moment it is focused on social media marketing production via time lapses and small video clips. We also develop a very interesting style of photography where you capture a whole sunset and then stack it on top of each other and it creates some fascinating results sometimes, we sell prints and canvases of some images that were developed that way.

I think that what sets RMS Time-lapse Photography apart from other companies is that we work with authentic passion. You can see the excitement and creativity through our work and we are 100% focused that the end result is perfect for the client.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, I think I can target small businesses that are still developing a social media presence and Phoenix has tons of small businesses opening and growing.
