Today we’d like to introduce you to Ric & Jen.
Ric & Jen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My Fiancé and I met in Scottsdale four years ago. She is an avid global traveler who has visited many countries throughout the world. With her as my guide, we traveled more frequently than I ever had and often turned to Airbnb for our accommodations. We enjoyed the intimacy of these types of accommodations over the hotels. As we experienced more this hospitality trend we decided to get into hosting Short Term Rentals ourselves. We started with a small 1BR condo near Old Town. It needed some pretty significant renovation to be the type of place we would enjoy ourselves. After some drama and a few setbacks, we finally completed our condo and launched it on Airbnb. It took off. We experienced instant success. We made plenty of rookie mistakes along the way and learned a lot. We then purchased our second condo and turned that into another Short Term Rental. Happy with the results of our endeavor, we focused on fine tuning what we had created, making them better as we learned the tricks of the trade. It blossomed in to an actual business when a guest staying in one of our condos decided he liked them so much that he bought one under the condition that we would manage it for him.
This is where Emerson K Management (named after our youngest son) was born. With the idea of growing slowly and maintaining the same quality we displayed on our own we have been adding clients over the last year and a half. We currently have 10 active listings and a few amazing new properties in the works.
We’re focused on being a small “boutique” management company for investors and home owners who will appreciate our hands on approach to short term rental management. Our attention to detail and personal owner-manager relationships have proved highly successful as a handful of our properties have earned Airbnb distinction as “Plus” and VRBO’s accolade of “Premier Partner” We hope to keep building on the success and offer our services to a larger audience as we transition in to doing this full time.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not at all. Renovating our first condo/Airbnb was a giant headache for such a small space. What should have taken three to four weeks and $6-8,000 quickly turned in to a 2 1/2 month ordeal that nearly ended our excitement for real estate investing and short term rentals. Shady contractors, senile neighbors, and lack of time and resources tested our mettle.
Airbnb guests can be a finicky bunch as well. We’ve had our fair share of issues along the way but have come out the other side more knowledgable of the process and what it takes to experience success.
Please tell us about your business.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me professionally is to be at the top of the class. Do whatever it is that you do with love and precision to the point that you stand out above all others as the industry leader. Not necessarily based on size or accomplishments but more on executing your trade with ease and perfection to the point it comes naturally.
Success to me personally is to provide a life for my family that we can be proud of. A long a prosperous marriage, happy, confident and successful children and to build something that can be passed through generations.
