Meet R Craig Coppola of Lee & Associates Arizona

Today we’d like to introduce you to R Craig Coppola.

Thanks for sharing your story with us R Craig. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started as an office broker leasing office space in 1984. I am still doing that today. But just like it says in the incredible poem The Dash, the difference is in the dash, the space between then and now which represents 33 years’ worth of experiences. In that time or “dash” I’ve been married to my wife for 28 years, raised 4 incredible children, hiked some of the most incredible trails in the world (including Everest and Kilimanjaro), won a world championship in Tae Kwon Do, ran over 80 marathons, and I’ve built a successful career in brokerage and investing.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Any time you are in a commission-based sales position in a cyclical industry you are guaranteed ups and downs. In my career I’ve had the pleasure to experience The Great Recession and the savings and loan crisis (RTC). Both hit my industry extremely hard. I watched brokers I respect flounder and struggle to stay in business. Phoenix keeps coming back proving that you must take the long view to cut it in this business.

Please tell us about Lee & Associates Arizona.
In 1991, eight guys including myself started Lee & Associates Arizona. We are commercial real estate brokers, and our firm is now 42 principals strong in Arizona, with 57 offices across the US. Within Lee & Associates, my partner and I operate our own brokerage team, Coppola-Cheney, which has continuously been the all-time top-producing team in all Lee & Associates offices across the country. It’s my team’s reach and my national voice that separates me from the others. We have 10 driven and talented people on our team who give excellence every single day. Our people (I know cliché, but true) make the difference.

What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
None – my secret to success is working my ass off every day for 34 years.

What do you like most about our city?
I love Metro Phoenix for the weather, the people, and the opportunity. The weather because I can be outside every day of the year. As a third generation Arizonian, I love the people because most are from other places and have moved here and they want to live here and grow roots. Finally, I love the opportunity that Arizona provides. Growing, Western spirit, and the ability to make your mark even if you are new or not from an established family.
