Meet Peter Borg of Borg’s Saber Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Borg.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was a kid, I was always fascinated with swords and martial arts. I would watch any movie involving swords my parents would let me watch. Then, one day, my 4th-grade teacher told me about something called Star Wars. As soon as I got home I rushed to see if we had a copy on VHS. No luck, but my neighbor did! It was love at first sight. I watched the original trilogy over and over again. When I got older I could start to pursue my interests in greater depth. So, my senior year of high school I started fencing and continued for the next 6 years.

Then I started training in Tae Kwon Do, Kick Boxing, and Krav Maga and incorporating any swordplay I could into those disciplines. Then, one day I decided to find lightsabers I could actually duel with and I discovered Ultrasabers.com! I instantly bought one for me and my wife. Once the arrived I went to work coming up with a curriculum for a class. As soon as I done, introduced the idea to my martial arts master and my first Lightsaber class was born! Now, I need another teacher. My demo partner and good friend Ty Newman was the perfect fit! We did several more classes after that one over 2 years adding new and improved teachings.

Once I left the martial arts school, I decided to start my own company teaching my love of the lightsaber. Borg’s Saber Academy was created! We now travel all over The Valley teaching anyone willing to learn (8 years old and up). I have two great people working with me now, Ty Newman and Linda Graber, and we have established a partnership with Saber Knights Academy in North Scottsdale to be able to reach even more people. The whole experience has been difficult, scary, but a ton of fun!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. We have a very difficult time getting people to realize we actually exist! Lightsaber training! That’s something that only happens in the movies! Not anymore, but still people don’t see it as a real thing. Also, everything takes much longer than you initially thought.

Things like coming up with a logo, brochure, business cards, marketing, adapting the curriculum to accommodate all ability levels. We still are struggling to get steady business. The most difficult thing we have encountered is getting our name out there. We have hosted several free events to get people more interested, including doing a giant event a charter school for around 75 kids. Trying to come up with better ways to get exposure can get difficult, but the more experience has taught us a lot and it’s very fun.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Borg’s Saber Academy – what should we know?
We train people in the way of the Lightsaber by adapting classical sword training into modern form. We travel all over hosting trainings for everything from birthday parties to corporate team building events. We are most known for not having a set location. We travel to whoever hire us.

We also keep a large amount of lightsaber in stock so everyone can use the best training tools. What sets us apart is we adapt to whatever the client is looking for. We can do short or long events for the young and old. We are most proud of that and we have never had a dissatisfied customer. We have a perfect 5-star rating to date!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
We never gave up! There were lots of times we thought about it. No calls or emails from long periods of time. I wouldn’t call us successful yet. We are still establishing ourselves and getting our name out there. Our most important contributor to our current level of success is word of mouth.

We have done a few different events for people who have seen pictures from one of their friend’s parties. Having satisfied customers helps produce more customers.
