Meet Patrick DeRueda of Curbside Recycling and Disposal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick DeRueda.

Patrick is the president of GOAT First Team, LLC dba Curbside Recycling. Patrick, as a Hispanic American, maintains certification as a Minority Business Enterprise (MBE). The daily business operations are managed and directed by him.

He graduated in 1987 with a BA and a Certificate in Health & Safety Studies from California State University at Los Angeles.

He was employed by BFI Waste Systems from 1987-2001. During a seven-year stretch, he was transferred six times to different BFI locations within California and Texas. Past duties included management of BFI’s safety program for their Risk Management Department in all of North America, as well as District Manager in Santa Barbara, CA. Pat was with Waste Management in various positions from 2001-2012. He served as a Market Area General Manager in the West, where he oversaw various business operations in New Mexico and Tucson, Arizona. Under his leadership, the New Mexico Market Area was recognized as the 2003 and 2004 Best Market Area in the Western Group of Waste Management, and in 2004 the Best Overall Market Area in Waste Management.

Patrick was President of Waste Management’s Recycle America, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Company from 2005-2011. He was responsible for all aspects of the Company’s recycling activities including processing, commodity marketing, and application of practical technology. He was also a member of the Waste Management Senior Leadership Team. Recycle America is the largest processor of recyclable materials from business and households in North America. They handle more than 8.6 million tons of commodities per year through 106 locations in the United States. Recycle America had more than 3,000 employees, and generated $1.6 billion in annual revenues in 2011. He accepted an early retirement package from Waste Management in 2012.

He served as the year 2000 President of the Board of Directors of the Santa Barbara Region Chamber of Commerce. He also served as the 1996 Hispanic Business Council Chairperson. Served on the Board of Directors for: Business First National Bank of Santa Barbara (Founding), and currently serves on the Board of Strategic Materials Inc.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest struggle along the way was to maintain the right work-life balance. As a former senior executive with a national, publicly-traded corporation, the demands required many days away from home. Essentially, I was a weekend father who always thought about work even though I was physically present at home. This realization hit home recently, when my son wrote on his college application essay that, “my father was rarely home during my formative middle school years.” That is quality time lost with my wife and son that can never be recovered.

We have virtually no customer losses because we provide great service at a fair price and base our price increases on CPI. We separate ourselves from the competition by providing an all-inclusive price for trash collection service. There are no fees that fluctuate monthly! Fees complicate the invoice and can often times represent 25% to 35% of your bill. Our invoice is easy to read and easy to budget.

What were you like growing up?
I virtually spent every day of my childhood at a Boys & Girls Club which was only a block from my house. At an early age, I was able to interact with other kids of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. I was exposed to Club staff, as mentors, who I still communicate with today. I was selected as the “Boy of the Year” in 1976. I grew up playing basketball, which led to a leadership role as the captain of my high school championship team.
