Today we’d like to introduce you to Ozzie Strand.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ozzie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
AZGrassman was formed 11 years ago. I started shortly after that, doing installations and then moving on to sales. The owner fell ill and asked me to take over the operations for him and soon after that I purchased the equipment and name.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, I don’t think any business has had a smooth road the whole way. Initially I struggled with finding good help but eventually have found enough good people that I now have 2 crews that do installations. Perhaps the other biggest obstacle the last few years has been the influx of “landscapers” or people who cut grass and trim trees trying to install artificial grass. They have the advantage of already being in someone’s back yard and most homeowners can easily be talked into letting them install the grass if they have a good relationship. I however have been in many back/front yards that have been done this way and the workmanship leaves a lot to be desired. We do this every day, they do it once every few months, and who would you rather have do the artificial turf for you?
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about AZGrassman – what should we know?
We are a small company that only does artificial grass and pavers. We show up to our sales appointments on time or call if there is a change in time. We show up at our installations on the day we say we are going to. Our service is very personal in that I am at every installation to insure that what the homeowner and I talked about gets done. We try to leave the area as clean as when we arrived. We only deal with artificial grass made in the USA and not China, this is to insure that the turf lasts longer than a couple of years, depending on usage ours should last 15-25 years.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The previous owner was a very big help in teaching me about artificial grass. He helped with the installations until I was comfortable to do them. He also helped me setup vendors, go on sales calls and was there when I took over the operations.
- While the initial outlay is expensive, over 15 – 25 years the amount of savings is substantial. Depending on the quality of turf and size of the project prices are starting at $3.50/sqft installed up to $7.50/sqft installed
