Meet Jessica Clark of Novaa Girl in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Clark.

Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
With my story very much still so new, evolving and just beginning, I find this question to be so exciting because I wonder how I might answer maybe a year or two from now. For many years, I have wanted to create and cultivate a space for expressing and documenting my travel experiences and creative visions but just never knew where to begin. After becoming inspired by other adventure enthusiasts, I wanted to ignite that same type of travel inspiration for others as those who did for me.

After graduating from ASU with degrees in journalism and marketing, I went through some time where I felt lost. I felt like I had spent so much time figuring out what it was I didn’t want to do, that I missed out on time where I should have been figuring out what it was I did want to do.

On a search to find just that, I took some time off to travel and earned a great respect for the knack of experiencing. Because of these adventures, some near and others far, I decided to create a travel and lifestyle blog where I showcase many of my adventures, life experiences and passion for creativity and photography.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not exactly!

Though I had this idea for a blog for some time, I had also been at peace with the fact that it may or may not ever go anywhere and at the very least should be used for personal documentation and/or an online portfolio.

Once I finally committed to the idea, I very much struggled with the realization that this idea had most certainly been done before and done well by many worldwide creatives at that. I struggled with the idea of opening yourself up to criticism, thoughts on how to bring a new perspective to an already well-established industry, and struggled with where to begin. Once I became accepting of the truths that there is always going to be someone better, more talented and more successful than you no matter which walk of life you’re in, everything suddenly became easier…. maybe not even easier but definitely less stressful.

So I just started to run with it. My parents had always instilled in me that every moment throughout life, even those so miniscule-feeling, is a memorable adventure for some reason or another and it’s your job to find the beauty. A morning at your local farmer’s market or a brief conversation with a person you normally wouldn’t come across might be more enlightening than you think.

After establishing my mission behind the blog, other obstacles followed. At one point I was very fortunate enough to have had a flexible job that allowed me to work from anywhere and I got to spend much of my time exploring. But I was adventuring at such an exponential pace that my content kept getting pushed back and never finished. So much so that I have about ten blog posts in my queue, half-finished, waiting for some hardcore love and affection. eeeek!

On top of that and having a hybrid of other jobs I just felt, and still do, feel so behind and neglectful. Though still very new to the blogging world, I would imagine time management, balance and planning are a few common struggles many bloggers might generally face during their creative journeys!

Tell us more about Novaa Girl – what should we know?
NovaaGirl is an online forum and personal blog where people can go to find travel tips, adventure inspo and remember why it’s important to create a habit of going out of your comfort zone regularly and experiencing new places, new people, new cultures and new understandings even if it’s just in your own town. When people continue to learn from others and remain open to new types of thinking, I think that’s a recipe for something really beautiful.

The name comes from a word I came across while reading. I’m not even sure it’s claimed as a real word, but Novaturient, as defined by the internet, is described as the desire or pursuit for powerful change in one’s life, behavior or situation.

I’ve always been oddly fascinated with the idea of human purpose and life’s equivocal journey. To know that you are not bound to your yesterday and neither are your hopes, desires and aspirations is very much a reassuring if not an inspiring feeling. And on this destination-less journey after college to find exactly what it was I wanted to do, the word just sort of stuck with me.

As far as what sets me apart from other travel bloggers, I’m not sure I’m there yet. Right now I’m on a journey to live the most full, free, honest and passionate life I can, and right now I’m doing that through the means of adventure all near and far. So I’m certain Novaa will continue to evolve as do I.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I would say staying determined and creative are two qualities imperative to most people’s success, and most certainly mine too. Right now I’m in the midst of putting my degree to work, gaining experience in a full-time marketing position while also trying to stay true to my creative missions so in a time sense it’s essential for me to get creative with my time and stay driven.
