Today we’d like to introduce you to Norm Janoff.
Norm, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
With nearly 1000 members, Arizona Road Racers (ARR) is the largest and oldest running club in Arizona and one of the biggest in the USA.
ARR was incorporated in November 1970 as a non-profit organization to promote running for health and fitness and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.
ARR stages annual races from one mile to a marathon, and hosts social events for members.
We believe running is a community affair and our goal is to grow running throughout Arizona with affordable, fun and family friendly events. Knowing kids are the next generation of runners, we always allow members’ kids (under 18) to participate in our events at no cost with advanced registration. Non-members under 18 can run any of our races for $5 with advanced registration.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The challenge is to get our message of low cost races out to the running community. There are now plenty of big budget, high priced races with lots of bling that compete for runners. We strongly believe that there is a place for a volunteer group to provide high quality, fun races at an affordable price.
Please tell us about Arizona Road Racers.
We are a group of volunteers that lead a non-profit running club. Our focus is providing a high quality running experience for all runners at an affordable price. We have a special focus on youth running and provide races to those under 18 for $5 or free to members of the Arizona Road Racers. In all cases, the youth runners need to sign up in advance in order to obtain the reduced race registration fee.
