Meet Nidelka Mayers of Your Wedding Affair in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nidelka Mayers.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started when I was about 6-yrs old and my grandmother took me to a seamstress to have an Easter Sunday dress made. when the dress was ready and I brought it home I decided to make the same outfit for my doll with the scraps of fabric. It turned out pretty good for my first one and I continued to dress my dolls, By the age of 12 I attended couple sewing lessons and was able to make my own clothes.

For the most part, my sewing skills were utilized for alterations, as clothes just never fit. With grandmas help, guidance and instructions I perfected my sewing skills in the areas of construction, redesign and pattern making. After having to wear a lavender skill bridesmaid dress in my cousin wedding, and not being able to find a nice dress for my friend’s bridal party, it identified a need in the industry for bridesmaid dresses, and so Your Wedding Affair is launch in 2007 initial providing Wedding Planning services and by early 2008 I started designing bridesmaid and formal wear dresses for a selected clientele.

Moving to Phoenix in 2011 identified the lack of resources available to continue pursuing bridal design at the same rate I was in New York, it seemed almost an impossible task but after deciding that I need to retire from a successful IT Project Management career, so in 2015 Your Wedding Affair was re-born to introduce its line of bridesmaid dress, When the opportunity to participate in the Rainbow Weddings Bridal Expo came along the first Bridal Gown was created to showcase work, that one gown inspired an entire collection.

Today, Your Wedding Affair offers engaged couples the option of having a custom made to measure gown made regardless of her style, whether she is a Traditional, Boho, Vintage, Sexy or Mother bride. The best part of this experience is that the bride gets to participate in the design process, providing her with a unique gown that will fit her flawlessly.

The Your Wedding Affair studio is currently located within F.A.B.R.I.C. the fashion incubator program sponsored by the city of Tempe in collaboration with Label Hoder and AZ Fashion Source.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The most challenging part of this journey is having fashion resources easily available. Arizona doesn’t provide the luxury of a fashion district to go shopping for fabric; that was the biggest adjustment after living in New York were a train fabric and lace is a train ride away.

That said having the Your Wedding Affair studio within the AZ Fashion Source has been very helpful, I have learned the value of source fabric online and with vendors and more importantly, it provides the resources and tools needed to produce and manufacture my garments.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Your Wedding Affair – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Unlike traditional bridal salon, Your Wedding Affair offers brides to be a collection of hand-made dress that can be customized into their dream dress.

My made-to-measure concept is simple; its start with a consultation where brides can browse and fit on gowns from the selection available to determine what silhouette, the next step is to select fabric, trim, accessories, and color, followed by designing the gown, and lastly, measurements are taking. Within two weeks a muslin version of the dress is available for fitting, adjustments are made and the pattern is ready for production and within 6 weeks the dress is ready for pickup. In addition to the dress, brides have the option of having the bridal accessories (veil, belt, sashes etc).

The best part of my job as the designer and manufacturer of every garment, its the opportunity to share in a couples big day, Who knew that designing doll dresses will turning into making wedding dress one day.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
