Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Dekavallas.
Nicole, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My husband, Adam, and I started Dance FX Studios in 2001 after several years in the dance business. We opened our studio as an alternative to the traditional ballroom studios by offering social dancing only, versus more formal dancing that you may see at a competition. It was (and still is) our mission to teach the everyday person how to be confident and comfortable in social dance situations, like at weddings and nights out with friends. We took time to re-invent the standardized ballroom dance syllabus to make the moves we teach easy to use in the real world. Smaller movements on a crowded floor is a good thing! 😉
In the last year, we have re-introduced traditional ballroom back into our school as an option for those who are interested. Our main focus is still social dancing, and we are proud to have taught thousands of singles, couples, and brides and grooms, over the last 16 years, how to enjoy dancing as much as we do!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, owning a small business has its challenges. There are staff issues (working with 20 somethings), making payroll on rough months, and offering a top notch product that can’t be beat. That’s a ton of pressure! We did make it through the recession though, which was a huge blessing, but it wasn’t always easy.
What I choose to focus on is how dancing can enhance the lives of those we meet. I know when I see a couple who is out of sorts, or a shy, introverted guy or gal, that knowing how to dance will help them reconnect, add romance, and build confidence. That transformation is what I live for and that’s why I LOVE what I do!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Dance FX Studios – what should we know?
We really did re-invent the wheel when it came to traditional ballroom dance studios. Gone are the days of boring, black and white ballrooms where everyone must be formal and prim. We like to have fun, let loose, and let our studio be our student’s home away from home. We want to help demystify learning how to dance so everyone can enjoy the freedom and self-expression that we know is hiding within each person. What sets us apart is a relaxed, welcoming environment with a team that really cares about the progress of our students. With a unique syllabus and method of instructing that we have developed over the last two decades, we want everyone who comes to our studio to enjoy discovering dance and all of its benefits.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Creativity. Always keeping things fresh and exciting for our staff and students is our number one priority. We also like to focus on FUN! As adults, life can be too serious. Our studio is a place to let go and be free from stress.
