Meet Nenita Linton of Aloha Cakes AZ in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nenita Linton.

Nenita, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started Aloha Cakes out of necessity to satisfy my incessant craving for Hawaiian desserts from my hometown of Hilo. My family was tired of carrying cake from home whenever they visited me in Arizona. Let me say, a 9″ guava cake does not travel well after 6 hours of flying! Despite the sad appearance of my jet-lagged cake, the taste was always amazing. It was the taste of home I loved and missed. I realized I needed to spare my family of my cake obsession and through experimentation, research and a lot of cake tastings in Hawaii, Aloha Cakes AZ was born.

Baking and cooking came pretty easy for me. I come from a family of amazing bakers and cooks. My mom shared her love of baking by teaching me and sharing with me her favorite recipes for sweet bread and Pan desal, a Filipino bread that melts in your mouth especially when they come straight out of the oven. Luaus and special family gatherings meant a large table full of incredible homemade dishes and desserts. Making cakes is my way of keeping Hawaii and my family traditions close to my heart.

I started promoting Aloha Cakes AZ at farmers markets and cultural events. This led to more promotional opportunities including an invitation from Local First AZ to participate as a featured vendor at the Devour Phoenix event and to a Yelp event.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can’t say it has been easy, but with the help of family, friends and loyal customers, Aloha Cakes AZ is thriving.

My biggest challenge is finding a commercial kitchen that can accommodate my baking needs because I currently do not have a store of my own. Because I rent a space from active catering kitchens and cafes, I have limited space and time to bake my cakes. Although this is the biggest challenge with my business, it works for me right now. I would love to have my own bakery one day but my very active family is my first priority and that means being the number one fan at soccer games and band competitions for my two sons.

Aloha Cakes AZ – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Aloha Cakes brings the taste of Hawaiian paradise to you. We specialize in tropical flavored cakes, including Guava, Guava Strawberry, Passion Fruit, Mango and Haupia. All the handcrafted cakes are custom made with only the best ingredients.

We use ingredients that are from Hawaii Guava and Lilikoi puree, Hawaiian cinnamon, vanilla, rum, li hing mui and other ingredients that set us apart from other local bakeries. My cakes are uniquely Hawaiian.

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
My proudest Aloha Cakes AZ moment was being invited to participate at the Devour Phoenix event. I was featured alongside award-winning chefs and restaurants. Although it was intimidating at first, I quickly realized the guests were enjoying my cakes and giving us rave reviews. I experienced a great moment not only for my business but for my personal life too by being able to share this incredible opportunity and experience with my son, my biggest cheerleader.

The second proudest moment was being featured on FOX 10 News in Phoenix. The spotlight story on Aloha Cakes AZ led to valuable exposure and interest which resulted in numerous bookings for cakes.
