Meet Michael Denton of Michael Denton, Private Chef in Chandler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Denton.

Michael, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up in an Italian family in the South, I learned at an early age that delicious, healthy food is an essential ingredient to a good life. As a child, I watched my mom and grandmother prepare culinary masterpieces from scratch. Over time, I was able to pick up many tips and tricks from helping them in the kitchen, so the culinary industry was a natural fit when I became old enough to start thinking about my career.

Working in the restaurant industry from the age of 16, I was trained at the University of Tennessee Culinary Institute, and have since worked in both fine dining and casual American restaurants. It wasn’t until I switched to catering and later moved from Tennessee to the Phoenix area, however, that I decided to go into business for myself as a private chef.

My broad experience, Southern upbringing and strong Italian influence have all come together to enable me to hone culinary skills and my own personal cooking style. Today, I bring classic and gourmet dishes with an Italian flair to dinner parties around the Valley. I was also named the 2016 #1 private chef in Phoenix by Thumbtack, based on client reviews, and held the #2 spot in 2015.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. The culinary industry has its highs and lows. Before I went into business for myself, I worked at a number of restaurants and really couldn’t find one that was a true fit for my personality and expertise. I love creativity in my kitchen, and that isn’t always rewarded in the restaurant industry. Ultimately, I’ve found more success as a private chef, and I’ve turned some of the negatives I experienced during my time in the restaurant industry to guide decisions that I make with my own staff now.

Michael Denton, Private Chef – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As a private chef, I create one-of-kind, in-home dining experiences for clients around the Valley. I specialize in parties from two guests to 50 guests and regularly work with clients for anniversaries, birthdays, bachelor/ette parties, corporate dinners and many other special occasions!

My main focus is making my clients’ events enjoyable through the use of high-quality food, unique menus, and a fun attitude. I’ll adapt my approach to match the event — whether that means interacting with guests and sharing food tips, or staying more in the background if needed. There’s no pretense when working with me. I want my clients and their guests to have a good time!

The best part of my job is getting to meet people from all over the Valley and be a part of special moments in their lives — from engagements to milestone birthdays and anniversaries. I’m most proud of the feedback I get from my clients and the reviews they leave on websites like Thumbtack and Yelp. I was actually named the 2016 #1 private chef in Phoenix by Thumbtack, based on client reviews.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment in my career so far was when my business hit its first stage of growth. There was a point, about a year in, where it really hit me that being a private chef was a sustainable business and an experience clients are willing to pay for. My sales have essentially doubled year over year since I launched in 2014, and I’m looking forward to continued growth.
