Meet Melissa Fink of Girly Girlz in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Fink.

Melissa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Up until May 2016, when I purchased Girly Girlz from the original owner, I had spent my career in communications and politics. I had always dreamed of having my own business, but also liked the security of a steady job. Then, I experienced two life-changing events.

In 2004, my younger sister, a student at the University of Arizona, was killed by a drunken driver. Five years later, days after I delivered my oldest son, I developed an autoimmune disease in my brain that had gone undiagnosed. This led to a stroke and I had to learn to walk and use my left arm again.

When I found out the previous owner of Girly Girlz wanted to sell, I felt it was meant to be. You only get one life and I wanted to do something I could be more creative with. This venture was a big calculated risk, and I’m doing everything I can to make it pay off.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, as any small business owner will tell you. The business was trending downward when I bought it and needed day-to-day TLC. This business is all-consuming but I love it! The biggest struggles are managing cash flow, hiring and keeping the right people, and not enough hours in the day to get everything done!

Please tell us about Girly Girlz.
Girly Girlz is a 2,200-square-foot space partly dedicated to retail, where customers browse and select from just about any product a girl from age 2 to 12 would crave. There’s also a section for onesies and newborn gifts. The other part of the business is two rooms that host celebrations from birthday parties for dozens of guests to intimate tea parties between a grandmother and her granddaughter. Girly Girlz also hosts afternoon dates like a glam session for besties to get their hair and nails done, day-spa style. It’s also equipped to entertain with such party themes as princess, mermaid and dance club.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When my younger brother was born. I was 8 1/2 so I remember that period vividly. I loved having a sweet little baby that I could carry around.
