Meet Mehdi Farsi of State Bicycle in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mehdi Farsi.

Mehdi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Our goal when starting State Bicycle Co. was to produce top quality and good looking bikes at a price that was more accessible to everyone. The founders, myself, Eric Ferguson and Reza Farsi discovered there was a real gap in the cycling market while trying to find bikes for ourselves. We started selling 1 type of bike in 7 colors and 3 sizes. Today we have over 1000 SKUs, distribution all over the world, and our own shop in Tempe.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any business venture has its ups and downs and growing pains. With hard-goods, quick growth is good, but it is very capital intensive. We’re 100% bootstrapped / self-financed – so there are definitely sacrifices we’ve made as owners to grow the business. Overall, we love what we do and wouldn’t change anything about it.

Please tell us about State Bicycle Co.
State Bicycle Co. is known for our clean aesthetic and “rider first” approach, meaning we don’t sell anything that we as owners and riders wouldn’t use ourselves. Over the years we’ve created a reputation for ourselves as having a very connected and engaged community on social media and have distinguished State Bicycle Co. through unique, limited edition products and collaborations.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Not one distinct moment stands out, but I have many fond memories of riding bikes around with my brother and business partner Reza Farsi, being free and carefree.
