Meet Megan Anton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Anton.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always had a love for the beauty industry. As a child, I was always playing with my doll’s hair or my own. I was always trying different styles, putting curlers in my hair or whatever else I could think of to create a style all my own. I was fortunate to know at such a young age that I wanted to grow up to be a hairstylist. The fall after high school graduation I enrolled into beauty school. During beauty school, I worked as an assistant at a salon that I would further continue my career at and work there for 8 years before leaving to open my own salon suite that I would have open for 2 years.

In the fall of 2012, I moved to Arizona from the Chicago suburbs days after I got married, leaving my home, where I started my career was extremely tough, but I was also very excited to build my business in a new area. Being new to Arizona, I was starting at the beginning again, but I jumped right in with both feet and hit the ground running. I found a salon in town where I began working as a commission stylist. I did anything I could do to get clients in my chair by consistently promoting myself, handing out business cards and starting a referral program. I knew if I could get 10 good clients, I could grow my business through word of mouth. One year after working as a commission stylist I transitioned to booth rental. At this point, I began creating a brand for myself. I started a business Facebook and Instagram account. I was consistently posting pictures of my work and using catchy hashtags to gain new clients. Business was great, but I found myself missing having my own salon suite.

The fall of 2016, I left the salon I was working at and opened up my own one chair salon located in Salon Boutique in Surprise, AZ. By having my own salon suite, I was able to showcase my personality through the decor of my salon and I am able to accommodate my clients in a more personal space. I am beyond happy in my new location.

I have been a hairstylist for over 14 years and I still have a passion to learn in the ever-evolving hair industry and continue to attend educational classes and learn new techniques daily. I specialize in dimensional color (I love blondes), precise cutting/styling and formal styling.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part, it has been a pretty smooth road. There were some trouble times like when the economy crashed in 2008, that I hit my business pretty hard and I slowed down quite a bit at work for a short time.

We’d love to know more about your business.
I am a passionate hairstylist in a one chair salon. I specialize in color, balayage, foil placement, precision cutting and formal styling. I am known for my passion for hair and the beautiful blonde dimensional color I create. I think what sets me apart from other hairstylists is because I have a thorough consultation with every client, whether it’s their first time in my chair or I’ve been seeing them for years. I am very honest with my clients and I always offer suggestions and professional advice. My clients are always thanking me for my feedback.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I always thought that a successful hairstylist was just a busy hairstylist. It wasn’t until a few years into my career that I started to realize that it is much more than that. It is about creating relationships with your clients. It’s about clients putting 100% of their trust in you, whether if they’re making a big change to their hair color, cutting their hair short or you’re styling their hair for their wedding day. Being a successful hairstylist is partially about being busy behind the chair, but its also about retaining your clients so they come back to you. New clients are always great and help expand your business, but the faithful clients are the ones who really define your success.
