Meet Matt Slater of Realty ONE Group – Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Slater.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Matt. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I am a born and raised Midwest guy. I lived in Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri before moving to the beautiful Phoenix, AZ. I originally went to college for business and then finished by getting my Bachelors degree in ministry. I have always wanted to own my own business and spend a lot of free time thinking up new business ideas that I would love to try in the future.

I was a pastor for my professional career prior to getting licensed as a Realtor®. I have always loved meeting new people and helping them accomplish goals that are important to them. I have found that real estate is the perfect avenue for this and I have been able to meet some awesome people through it.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have viewed real estate as a marathon and not a sprint. Too many people get into business and see it as a get rich quick scheme. Running a business is strategic and methodical. I’m building for my future, not just the present. My wife and I are both small business owners (she is a wedding/elopement photographer “@AllisonSlater” on Instagram).

We understand that we need to invest in our businesses – while others our age are in salaried positions, getting health benefits, 401(k), etc. we are working solely off of gaining new clients for businesses. There is nothing better than investing in and working for yourself though (in my opinion).

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Realty ONE Group – Scottsdale story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a Realtor®, meaning I help people with one of the biggest purchases or sales of their life. I like to treat my clients as I would want someone to treat myself; with respect, patience, and teaching. My wife and I have bought and sold our own house before; I know how much help went into that process through working with our Realtor®.

Buying a house isn’t something people do every day, so they need someone who can be patient and help them learn along the way. Because of my background in ministry, I treat my business as such – a ministry. I want people to know that they are taken care of and for my clients to feel like my family. The people that I work with will get the sense of community with me before, during and after buying their home.

Every client I have grows my family. I specifically brand myself for people who want to personally work with me. I am from the Midwest, come from a service background, enjoy trying new breweries, restaurants and coffee shops, love hiking and working out and love spending time with friends and family.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have always been thankful that things just seem to work out. I try to view life in a positive light. I know there can be a lot that can go and does go wrong.

My Dad and other family members of mine are battling cancer, I’ve walked with family through divorce, I’ve had students whose parents have suddenly passed away, known people who have been affected by fire, theft, etc.

Knowing that all these things exist makes you want to be reactive, not proactive – it makes you not want to have to deal with it – life has too much beauty and excitement to do that though. When we find good things in life, it just makes things better!
