Meet Mark Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Wilson.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in Hampton Virginia. I was always good at art, but in my community/specific culture, it was shunned upon. I became a football player. Went to the University of Cincinnati on an athletic scholarship. Played defensive end for five years at the university. Graduated (2018) and moved to Gilbert Arizona last year. I did not know anyone in the state when I moved here. I earned my master’s degree and worked towards becoming a BCBA Board Certified Behavior Analysis. I recently started painting in February. March I put in my thirty-day notice after grabbing an order every day. April I was in my first art show and sold a ton of art work. Today I am working as a full-time artist. God has led me all the way!

Please tell us about your art.
I paint on everything. I have work completed on canvas, card board frames, tables, walls, jackets, shirts, pants, and bags. All of my supplies come from Walmart arcylic paint, paint markers. I thrift all of my clothes. I would call myself a professional thrifter.

I paint to challenge people. I paint to make people feel like they are not in control anymore. I paint to connect to the people like me. Why? Because I express raw emotion in my work. That feeling of being not in control has been felt by all of us at one point to a certain extent. That awing feeling that doesn’t allow us to move at the moment. I like to capture that feeling from people; rather it is good or bad.

My message is to be you want at all times.
