Meet Mario Esquer of Avadium in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mario Esquer.

Mario, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The idea for creating a product design and branding company started during college at Arizona State University. While attending the Industrial Design program, I learned of a design consulting company called IDEO located in California. They were designing and engineering products in Silicon Valley for companies like Apple. I knew from that point on that I wanted to build a company like IDEO that provided product design to companies in Arizona. This led to me creating Avadium which would help companies design, brand and launch new products. We worked with inventors and small businesses to fortune 500 clients. It was a great consulting business model that allowed the company to solve problems and create product solutions that made a difference and improved client sales.

Overall, I got lucky with my break into the industry. Learning web design in college allowed me to create a website for my company without having to hire anyone at that time. My first client came across my website while I was a senior in college and needed help with a product design project they were working on. The money I made on the first project allowed me to go off and start building the company. My first 6 months were working from home and meeting clients at Starbucks before getting an office. As more money came in after each project, I could keep growing and expanding becoming more successful every year.

Has it been a smooth road?
Obtaining new clients is one of the more difficult tasks when launching a design firm. Many clients already had a firm working with them so it could be challenging to convince them to take a risk and utilize new firm for their projects. We did great work and having our existing client network recommend us was vital when we first launched to winning over new clients.

We were fortunate enough in the beginning to design private label for Harry Potter Movie Products, work on Star Wars products and design pet products for PetSmart. Ziploc, Glad, Kingsford, Intel, Tuft and Needle, Game and Smart Practice all followed and we have continued to build our client roster ever since.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Avadium is an Industrial design and product development firm. We develop new products for companies by using our innovative design process. We start by concepting ideas through sketches and refine them to the best only showcase the best. We then create presentation renderings or 3D renderings to show our clients realistic images of the products and how they will be used. After we have an approval on a design we then move to engineer the products with all of the parts in CAD. Using 3D CAD software allows ups to refines the design and prototype it. We use technologies like 3D printing and CNC cutting to quickly create parts.

Avadium also supports its product development with branding. We create brands not only through the physical products but also through the collateral like product naming, logo design and packaging.

The company was able to grow the business year over year by strong networking and making sure we provided great work to our clients. The key to our success was having clients refer us to other companies with strong recommendations.

I was included in the Arizona Republics 35 Entrepreneurs under 35 List which also provided some great PR and brought in more clients.

Our plans are to continue to grow and become more successful in Arizona and look for secondary offices in California and Michigan. We are also looking to launch some of our own internal products to the market in the next few years.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Scottsdale is a great city for entrepreneurs. There are plenty of startups located here and Scottsdale has some great resources for funding, business consulting as well as consultancies like us that help entrepreneurs and companies launch their product or business. I would recommend that they meet as many people as they can to build their network up. This is critical to making your business successful.
