Meet Maria Brunner of Musically Fed in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Brunner.

Maria, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started Musically Fed to honor my husband who was a Vietnam Vet and to help our veteran community by providing food wherever needed. I put together an organization whose mission is to mobilize the music industry in the fight against hunger.

We work with artists, promoters, management and venues nationwide to donate unused backstage meals to community organizations that feed the homeless, hungry and food insecure. Musically Fed identifies the opportunities, procures the resources, and coordinates all aspects of food handling, transport, and distribution. Our daily goal is to make it easy for promoters and performers to leave each city they visit with a lasting positive impact. In the United States alone, nearly 40% of the food supply is wasted each year. In 2019, locally via concerts and events, we provided over 6,400 meals. So far in 2020, because of the unprecedented pandemic we have provides over 12,000 meals.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a smooth road in terms of the music business really embracing us. Only two artists have turned us down. Our biggest issue is funding to hire paid staff members to handle the huge amount of growth.

We’d love to hear more about Musically Fed.
We are most proud of our community of artists, promoters, and touring staff all wanting to make this work to help feed people, especially veterans. What sets us apart is: our volunteers and board of directors are all from the music/entertainment industry.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up in Montana, philanthropy was ingrained in us. We were the definition of community and I embraced and loved every minute. I was determined to take that wherever I landed.
