Meet Marek Kulesza of Sonoran Outdoor Adventures in North

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marek Kulesza.

Marek, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been outdoorsy and active. Playing soccer, skiing, scuba diving, hiking, camping, I enjoy it all. Fifteen years ago, a friend introduced me to mountain biking, and I was hooked. After a while I joined a cycling club in Southern Wisconsin, called Treadhead Cycling. That led to racing. I started participating in “WORS” (Wisconsin Off Road Series) races on regular basis. I got good enough to qualify for amateur national championships in San Valley, Idaho in 2012.

I was also engaged in local cycling scene in Northern Illinois, where I was living at that time. I was one of the organizers of local group rides and I found it really rewarding introducing young people to the sport of cycling.

My wife and I moved to Arizona at the end of 2013, and it was a life changing experience. We have always been avid outdoor enthusiasts. Being active outdoors is an important part of our healthy lifestyle. We moved to Arizona because we fell in love with the unique beauty of the Sonoran Desert. This dual passion for staying active and the desire to continue exploring the magnificence of the Arizona’s landscape drove us to create Sonoran Outdoor Adventures, where we get to share these two great passions with other adventurous souls.

I’ve met people who were saying they loved what they were doing for a living, and now I am one of them.

Has it been a smooth road?
Overall, it was a smooth road. Local entities were helpful with acquiring necessary permits. We found a good insurance company out of Missouri. We partnered up with Framed Bicycles, a company out of Minnesota, which was happy to help us, since they had no presence in Arizona.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sonoran Outdoor Adventures story. Tell us more about the business.
We are Sonoran Outdoor Adventures, a small, family owned and operated Tour Company with a focus on desert biking. The bikes that we use are so called Fat Bikes and they are a big hit with our clients. The unique look and features of the bikes simply make riding them more fun. Thanks to the extra grip and traction the wide tires provide, the riders’ comfort and balance improve tremendously, making them perfect even for beginners and kids.

We are permitted to provide tours in most parks in Phoenix area. Our tours are small group oriented to enhance the experience of riding. The tours are about 4 hour long and they include: a bike, a helmet, a hydration backpack with water, snacks, and a mini photo session. The transportation can be also arranged at additional cost.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?

With people paying more attention to their lifestyle and health, and mountain biking being one of the fastest growing recreational activity in US, we believe that companies like ours will see a substantial increase in business.
