Meet Lisa Levinson of The Bakery Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Levinson.

Lisa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got the “baking bug” very early as a child. I remember baking with my Grandmother in her kitchen in Montreal very often, it was a great bonding experience for us. I believe this is where my love for baking stems from. As I grew up, I put baking on the back burner to focus on a career in Fashion. As I progressed, I realized this was not my true passion and immediately fell back into baking. I started very small, out of my home kitchen, creating and perfecting my recipes. Once I did that, I started doing local farmer’s markets around town. After doing markets for about five years, and growing a strong following, I decided to look for a brick and mortar store. I opened The Bakery PHX 3 years ago and haven’t looked back since!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been bumpy at times. Starting a business is not an easy task. There are a lot of little nuances that are easily overlooked. It becomes quite clear, quite quickly that just because you have a passion for something, that doesn’t mean running a business will come easily! I have had to learn a lot of the business side of things on the fly. It is very hard to run a small business successfully. Many people are so accustomed to going to the larger chains that it can be hard to break people of that mindset. We are trying to do that one mouthful at a time!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Bakery Phoenix – what should we know?
The Bakery PHX is a from-scratch bakery specializing in mouthwatering homemade baked goods. The thing that sets us apart from others is that we use all real ingredients in our products. No trans-fats, no preservatives, and no boxed mixes or buckets of pre-made “frosting”! Our claim to fame is probably our pies. We make a from scratch all-butter pie crust that is to die for! Our Banana Cream and Chocolate Cream Pies are probably our best sellers. We make a fresh from scratch pastry cream that we put in these pies and that is what really sends them over the top! One of the things I as an owner am most proud of is our partnership with The local Arizona Shake Shacks. They enjoyed our banana cream pie so much that they put it on the menu at all the Arizona Shack’s. As a foodie, it was beyond exciting to have the Culinary Director of the Shake Shack in my bakery tasting my creations!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I would say integrity is the most important characteristic of my success. If I don’t feel 100% about a product that I am selling, I just can’t do it. I have created and perfected these recipes over time. Customers call me and ask for different products that I don’t make and when I tell them I am sorry, we don’t make that, they get upset. However, I don’t want to say yes, I’ll make that for you, but have it not be one of the best things you’ve ever eaten.
