Meet Lisa Jayne Porter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Jayne Porter.

Hi Lisa Jayne, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My love for the arts has been a lifetime affair! I’ve been involved in all aspects of art since a little girl. I started out my career as a singer/songwriter and dancer. Performing internationally, on TV and Radio, for the BBC, Sky News, ITV, CYBC, RIK, and in London’s West End. I went on to study Voice and Musical Theatre at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, to hone my craft and I had the opportunity to devise original theatre when I left, with members of my graduating year. My time at university gave me a deeper understanding for creating art.

I moved from the UK to the US. I moved to be with my fiancé – now husband – and that’s when I discovered my passion for painting, at this point painting was just for me. I continued to perform and write as I started a family, and it wasn’t until the pandemic – with the world of live performance shut down – that I picked up my brushes to feed my creative soul and finished off a piece that I’d had tucked away. The piece was called ‘OVERTHINKER’, I shared it on my social media and it went absolutely mad; someone wanted to buy it right away and that catapulted the start of my painting journey and art business. I got requests for commissions and haven’t stopped painting since. I’m a mixed media artist but I specialize in acrylics, I truly believe that art has the power to change the world for the better, no matter what medium it is. Art builds and supports community and I want my art to do the same. I want my art to spark joy; and I think my abstract work reflects that, I use a lot of vibrant colors, metallics, gold leaf, glitter and glass. I’m very grateful to already be selling in the UK and US and it’s incredibly special to be in local businesses too. I hope to continue growing and developing a way to blend art and music further.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’m just starting out. I started my art business during the pandemic, which is definitely a risky time to start a new venture but with people at home now more than they’ve ever been, I feel like people just want to see things they love in their homes, art that makes them happy, so I’ve been fortunate that it’s going really well. I would say having a background in the music industry has taught me how to adapt, have a thick skin, and not be afraid to go for things. Which I think you need if you are going to start any business. So I’m very grateful for that.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a British mixed media artist, living in the US with my family. I specialize in acrylics. I’m most known for my huge explosive colorful abstract art pieces, portraits and nude woman series. I tend to create pieces 3 times the size of me, which is so fun.

I’m proud to be creating joyful art at a time the world needs some extra light and love. And to have the support of my local community. I’m very excited to already be selling in the UK and US and have my art in local businesses here in Tucson.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think professionalism, tenacity, perseverance, consistency and adaptation are some of the most important aspects of success. Doing whatever it takes to get the work done, and not being afraid to put your art into the world, backing yourself- someone will love it! Saying yes, even when you feel like you aren’t ready. Focusing on quality; providing people with the best service and product that you can, I think that reflects your passion.
