Meet Linda and Tom Rawles of Raven’s View in Far north Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda and Tom Rawles.

Linda and Tom, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We always wanted to create a mix between a nice wine bar like Tom knew from California and a neighborhood pub like Linda knew from the Midwest, something special and even magical that offers a few hours respite away from the craziness of today’s world. So, when Tom retired after nearly 40 years of legal practice, and Linda‘s practice in higher ed law stayed manageable, we decided to go for it. Our thought is: If you don’t do things out of your comfort zone, you get old! We just want to make a little money, raise some money for a causecnow and then, spend time with all of the interesting people around here, and preserve the special energy of this former Hohokam area.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been much harder than we thought, but also more fun. The build was tough – we had to bring electricity the length of a football field, through granite! The physical work is good for us – Tom has lost 45 pounds – but breaking my ankle in high season didn’t help! But, no regrets! It is just good that you don’t always know what you are getting into – nobody would start anything!

Raven’s View – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are really unique. The view into the national forest, the mountains, golf course…is soul tending. The evening dark sky allows a marvelous view of stars and often rising moon. We started as a wine pub with a nice, international flair (the wine list and the decor feature places we have been in our travels), but now people also come for the food. We try to get to know our customers and many have become our friends. This is a true local, non-corporate, Mom and pop. We are certainly not perfect, but we try our hardest to give each person a special experience. Oh, no politics and no kids under 16. We are a place for respite and conversation and magic.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Although we have over 65 years of legal practice between us, creating this special place in one of our proudest achievements.

  • Wine from $8 house to $600 bottles
