Meet Lexi Wyatt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Wyatt.

Lexi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always dreamed of becoming a full-time photographer since high school, but only thought of it as an unattainable dream.  I couldn’t possibly provide for myself and family doing something that I love so much! But dreams can become a reality with lots of hard work, support, and passion.

I was the girl in high school who always was found with her camera. I had way more photos of my friends and others at school than I did of myself or my family. I had so much fun with it! I shot my first wedding at the age of 16 and over the years was asked to do more. I never stopped doing photography, but it wasn’t until I got married a year ago when I began to fully invest more energy, money, and time into my art. I soon got very busy.

I knew it was the right time to quit my desk job when my life was unbalanced between work, photography, and home life. I needed more balance, and quitting my passion wasn’t what I wanted to do… so I moved forward with it. I put in my resignation at my job, and once I did, things kept falling into place and I was getting more inquiries and more bookings. Everything just felt right and has continued to progress. The more I put in, the more I get out.  As I have felt myself grow, I look back and without a doubt knew that photography was the right path for me.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have only been doing photography full-time for a few months now, but it has taken a lot to get to this point. I can think of 2 obstacles I have struggled with. First, it has taken me a long time to find MY editing style. I love keeping my photos colorful, but for the longest time, I wasn’t in LOVE with my work. Something was missing and I couldn’t figure it out. The biggest changes came after working one-on-one with a few other photographers that I admired who mentored me. I took what I learned from them and applied it immediately and saw dramatic changes and improvements.

My second biggest obstacle (which I’m still working on) is growing my audience. Social media algorithms are hard to work with sometimes, and starting out is difficult. Although I may not have thousands of followers, I have found other ways to reach an audience outside of Instagram… but this is probably my greatest obstacle in a market saturated with so many other talented creatives.

Please tell us about Lexi Wyatt Photography.
At Lexi Wyatt Photography, I specialize in photographing couples and weddings but also work with families and individuals. I am known for my unique style, which is colorful, natural, and timeless. My style sets me apart from other photographers who have a trendy look which all blends together. I keep a natural, bright look to my photos.
I am proud of my ability to connect with new people and help them feel natural and “not awkward” even when they start by saying they are “so awkward” and “not photogenic.” It’s all about enjoying moments and having fun together!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over and do it again, I would have put all of my energy into building and creating this business sooner–much sooner. Over the years, I had a few jobs to get by and have stability, but knowing NOW that I CAN provide for myself and family independently, I would have worked toward that much sooner. I always played things safe, but the risk has been worth it. I would have followed my passion from the start and invested more time, money, and energy into my business!
